I have had a LOT of contractions in the past week, sometimes coming only a few minutes apart for about an hour. They aren't painful, but are quite noticeable and uncomfortable. I mentioned this to my doc at my 32 week appointment yesterday, and she was somewhat concerned. She did an internal check and my cervix is still closed (good). She mentioned that infections can sometimes cause pre-term labor, so she did a few other tests and discovered BV. I did some research and found that BV can cause all kinds of problems, including pre-term labor, and that treating/curing the infection does not necessarily reverse the risks.
So now I'm concerned. I've had a very healthy pregnancy up to this point, and I still feel great. Any experience with this and or information from docs, etc, would be greatly appreciated!
Re: BV and early labor?
BV is quite common and some women don't even realize they have it. Did she give you antibiotics? Take them and also make sure to eat plenty of yogurt/probiotics to counteract the meds killing off ALL the (good and bad) bacteria in your vaginal tract. I've had it on and off before I got pregnant and when I mentioned it to my midwife she didn't seem overly concerned. She said the studies linking BV to preterm labor were old and to just keep on treating with the gel my other dr had given me.
If you are still worried I'd talk to your Dr about it to ease your mind...google can be kind of evil.
I had BV when I went on babymoon at around 26w (i think it was b/c I stopped eating yogurt daily while I was on vacation). I was treated w/the vag gel, and I went back on my daily yogurt diet as soon as I came home. The BV cleared right up. I too was worried about PTL, given that I was also anemic (on extra iron).
I'm 2 days past due, so definitely no PTL for me!

I am on antibiotics and will grab some yogurt after work. Most of what I find (in regards to research) mentions BV earlier in the pregnancy being linked to pre-term labor... I can find little info on a diagnosis in the 3rd trimester.
I guess if nothing else this has somewhat lit the fire under my @$$ to get the things done that I need to before baby arrives!
This. I've never had an issue with BV until this pregnancy. I don't get any obvious signs of it besides maybe peeing a little different every now and then. I've had it about 3 times so far this pregnancy and treated it with gels each time. My Dr has now said unless it's showing symptoms, we're not going to keeping testing for it. Many women get it and get rid of it on there own. He also said the research linking it to preterm labor is outdated and no longer considered accurate.

I had BV (untreated) in my last pregnancy and had my son at 36 weeks. I was complaining of a lot of discharge at my 28 week appt and my doc (military doc, technically only a resident for family practice, not even and OB resident- don't get me started! thank you air force...) kept telling me that it was normal. She tested to make sure it wasn't amniotic fluid but she didn't test for anything else. As a FTM at the time, I took her word for it that everything was normal.
Flash forward to 35 weeks and I was having horrendous back pain so I went to L&D to get checked out. They tested me for several things and it turns out I had BV and it had been untreated since 28 weeks. At that point they put me on flagyl and sent me home, as I was not having regular contractions. My current OB practice (different state, and not military docs) agrees that the untreated BV was the reason for my early delivery last time.
That's not a story meant to scare you, but just a different position than other posters. It sounds like you are being treated and your doc is not overly concerned, so that sounds like a good sign. However, I would not hesitate to be on the phone with the OB's office or L&D if you continue to have a lot of contractions.
Interesting... The CDC still lists preterm labor as being associated with BV(updated 2010), as does the American Pregnancy Association and the World Health Organization. Most of the studies I read were performed in 2000 or later... I'm just not buying that the info is outdated. It actually seems to me that they've got some good "beginning" studies, but that more research is needed to determine implications at various points during pregnancy.
