Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Christmas plans for your LO?

What traditions are you going to start with your LO? Our girls will just have turned 1 and I know they're still so young to really know Santa came...but I think we plan to still have presents under the tree in the morning and say santa came.

Are you going to go over board on presents since they dont really even know this year or save that for next xmas?? I'm still trying to decide how much I want to get this year.

Re: Christmas plans for your LO?

  • We're still working on getting little traditions together for our small family--we've just continued traditions with our extended families so far. I'll be checking back to see if anyone has any ideas!

I don't think we'll be getting our kids big presents until they start asking for specific things or get less from their grandparents/aunts/uncles. They get a ton of presents from our families, to the point where us getting them a lot of toys would just be redundant.

  • Christmas is 10 days before baby K's birthday so I wanted to start a tradtion like he gets his big gift for Christmas and small gifts for his birthday.  I know he's too young this year to understand but it would help me figure out what he gets for Christmas and what he gets for his birthday.  I also like the 4 gift idea, maybe a book, an outfit, a toy, and something else.

  • We are seeing family the weekend before Christmas, so we aren't going overboard on toys.  I'm going to get him something sentimental he can keep, maybe a wall plaque with his handprint.  He's probably going to be more thrilled playing with the paper and boxes, so gift wise he isn't getting much this year.

I'm not planning any Christmas traditions, but we'll see what happens.  Last year, DH brought gifts into bed as I was very pregnant, so we may do another Christmas in bed depending on how the morning goes.

  • We do a Christmas exchange between the kids. We draw names and then we take them shopping individually to pick out a gift for their sibling and they get to open that gift Christmas Eve. It's very fun. We also do a family dinner that is made up of mostly nice hors d'oeuvres, play a game (the older ones) and watch a movie together before bed.

As for presents, I wouldn't over do it, and start now. My mother went over board with my kids from the beginning, and it's hard to implement the less is more idea and focus on appreciation with them now. We are very much working on it though:)

  • We have lots of traditions that don't have to do with presents. When DD was 1, we only bought her a few presents, because, come on, she's 1:) Now she's 4, so she "gets" it, and talks about it more, but we still try to focus more on giving back, the spirit of the season, and how we should do things for those more in need than us.

DS will be the one who's 1 this year at Christmas, and again, we will only purchase him 1-2 gifts. He will get more than enough from both sets of grandparents, so for that first year, it's so nice to not feel the pressure to buy so many gifts!

I really like this. Growing up my parents would always let us each pick out a child in need from our churches christmas present drive and we had so much fun going to the store and shopping for what they need. Once my girls are old enough to understand I would love to do something simlar.

LOVE THIS. When the girls are a little older I like the idea of taking them each shopping on their own to pick out xmas gifts for eachother. :) My family always did sibling gifts on xmas eve as well and then parents and santa gifts xmas morning. Love that tradition.
