Toddlers: 24 Months+

Potty training input please :)

I know there is a pt board, but it doesn't get much action..so hoping you ladies could help :). My DD started potty training back in June with not much success, we tabled it and started again in August.  Since that time, she has pretty consistently gone on the potty about 70 percent of the time.  If she is watching tv, having fun playing, or is outside playing...she will have accidents.  But, at preschool, out running errands, out to dinner, etc... She rarely has them.  It seems likes she is far too close for me to give up and go back to diapers (though we do wear pull ups sometimes and at night), but I've tried every type of reward system I could think of and I just can't seem to motivate her to go EVERY time.  Anyone have any advice???  Have I done all I can do and the rest is just up to her?  Or should I try something else??  TIA!

  • If she isn't taking a break from activities and that's when she's having accidents, I'd make her take a break.  I think they just get so preoccupied, they don't think about it, then they can't hold it.  Just tell her it's time to go pee, and then resume playing.

  • We had the same issue with DS. I started setting the timer on my phone with a fun tone that he would recognize; maybe set it to go off every hour or so. When it went off we'd ask what that meant and he'd say, "Potty break!" We also explained to him that his game or toy will be there when he's done in the bathroom... pretty much said that til we were blue in the face. It actually worked really well. And it's portable so we followed through at friend's houses, grandparent's, etc. we did that for a few weeks an now he stops and tells us every time he has to go. Accidents are very rare. GL!

  • thanks for the input ladies.  my issue, i think, is that DD will NOT go if I tell her to. I mean, not only will she have a major meltdown, she actually HOLDS her pee.  If its HER idea to go, she goes on the potty.  If its MY idea, she holds it...and ends up having an accident in her pants about 5 minutes later.  We did try the potty watch a few months ago, but it only confused things more b/c she wouldn't go at all UNLESS the watch went off.  But, maybe now that she has the concept down we could try it again.  She did like it...we will will see.

Sounds like DD2. This is why I keep telling people that you can't force a child to go potty. Have you tried any kind of rewards? A sticker chart that she can fill up to earn a prize or a couple M&Ms every time she goes on the potty. Another thing that I've found helpful is going to the bathroom with DD2. I'll ask her if she wants to go first or second, and then she is willing to go after I go. Generally I use that tactic when I want her to go before we leave the house or before her tumbling class or times that I know she won't have quick access to a bathroom. But it might work if you can tell she really has to go but is unwilling to try.
