LO with sensory issues w/food texture?

My DD will only self-feed dry things like puffs. Anything else that is wet like steamed broccoli or sweet potato she will pick up and then drop it even though she eats it just fine if I feed it to her.

Anyone else's LO like that? Do you think they will get over the texture issue it if we just keep offering? It's hard to do finger foods when she is scared to pick up anything.

  • DS also does this when we first give him foods. He will usually refuse it, and push it all around the tray. I just leave it on there though and he eventually will pick it up and eat it. And if he absolutely wont have it, then I re introduce it again the next day and usually he acts like he never had a problem with it and will eat it right up.

  • That is very common for that age. They also chew it up and spit it out.

If they still won't touch textures closer to 2 or still only want purees then it could be texture. We did food therapy (occupational therapy) with DD because she only wanted food pur?e pouches at 22 months. She also had huge anxiety attacks at the sight of food (even if I was eating and not her) and would only eat maybe 1 rice cake the entire day besides milk and pur?e pouches. If I put a new texture on her lips she would gag and throw up..... She would throw up the first time and the 10th time with the same texture. That is true texture sensitivity!

  • Also forgot to mention it typically goes hand-in-hand with other texture issues. Won't allow certain textures of clothing or material to touch their skin, freak out if a grain of dirt is on them, sensitive to loud music, needing constant motion (bouncing or rocking)....and having food issues.
