Changing jobs?

Bank vs. vet. Hmmm. The people I work with at the vet are amazing people and are so supportive and already have bets on when LO arrives. But the bank has more money to be made. A decent amount more. I'm sure I won't be able to have te same kind of relationship with people at a bank as the people at the vet since everything is completely different. Small family owned practice compared to a national bank. Plus the bank offers amazing benefits compared to none at the vet. I guess it's safe to say that the bank is the logical best choice. And let's face it, I definitely need to make more money.

Re: Changing jobs?

  • I'm sorry that there's no rhyme or reason to the order of what I said. That's just sort of how my brain seems to be working nowadays

  • It's a really hard choice if you are happy.... I took a more family friendly job a few years ago making a lot less but I am less stressed and much happier..... There is a lot to be weighed in that kind of decision..... Best of luck!

I agree with this.  My mom just left a big corporate job for her old job, pretty much half the salary, but NO STRESS.  And no stress is a pretty big one in my book.  Good luck on your decision though!

  • I'd go for the vets office.
I'm so fortunate to work with people who are supportive if me as a mother.
Babies get sick, have doctors appointments, preschool specials, etc. and you'll want to work with people who will understand these things.
Plus, stress will not make you a better parent.
Can you cut some things out to make ends meet on the vet clinic salary?

  • Something else to think about is how much time you want to stay home with LO when they arrive. While at a small vet you may not have FMLA benefits they may be more willing to work with you on your leave if you ave been there a while, while going corporate they will likely give you 6 weeks MAX for vaginal and 8 MAX for C section (if they are nice and allow you medical leave of absence.)
  • I'm saving as much as I possibly can. I live with my parents so I can save for now. But I plan on having my own place before the baby is born, simply because my family's house is so stressful as it is that adding a new born into it will make everyone go crazy. I'm trying so hard to save everything. I'm putting over half of every check into savings and trying to remember to bring my lunch everyday but honestly I can hardly remember to do anything I tell myself to remember. I have literally NO benefits whatsoever at the vet. But yes, better relationships with my coworkers. The bank would offer health insurance, daycare, and more money and about the same hours as I work now. The vet offers one raise a year, and it's no certain amount, just however much they feel like giving me. And I know that they like me and want to help me out, but being a small family owned practice, there's only so much they will do. I feel like long term it's probably not the best thing for my child. I'm single. The father says he wants to help, wants to live together and all. But I'm not sure how realistic that idea will be. I will stay at my parents house as long as I physically and emotionally can. But this living arrangement is definitely not long term.
  • Hearing more about this situation, and not knowing how much consistency the father will have financially, I say you go for the bank job.

As a parent, if you can get more money and medical benefits for your child, then you take it. Then you'll have a better chance of standing on your own two feet.

  • Originally I would have said stick with the vet's office (I may be a little biased) but after reading your second update I would say take the bank job.

You will need benefits for yourself and your child and if you don't have that opportunity with your current job I would switch to the bank job.

  • I would definitely go with the bank option because of medical benefits. You need to be able to have that support with a child so you don't get raked with medical bills.

    YesYes

Just read your second update. If you have no insurance nor does your spouse I would have to say the bank as well.
