Babies: 3 - 6 Months

anyone else finding it hard to work out/lose weight?

Ok so part is laziness and part is my diet.  I loved working out/running before baby.  After a m/c in aug with this pg I was too scared to work out.  So its been a good yr since I had a really good work out.  at 6w pp I got the OK to work again, so I took LO on a few run/walks then I got sick with a cold and wanted to sleep instead, then it got cold out and I have gone to the gym (anytime fitness so no daycare) once.  I started back to work a few weeks ago mon-wed-fri but I don't get home until 5ish and really can't wait to see LO.  Plus DH has been working longer hrs so by the time he gets home around 6 ish I really don't want to go to the gym.  :(.  I had planned on starting back again today (new month figured why not) BUT DH has a softball game tonight, and LO wouldn't let me outta the house (long story but every time we went out of the house he screamed) I do have the wii and some games, I have some work out videos but just don't like doing it at home- which I think im going to have to work on!

sorry for the rant, but anyone else finding it hard to fit in working out?  Plus with me not working out my diet has gone down hill!

  • I feel much the same way!

I'm having major issues with motivation, but I really want to get on top of things before it gets too out of control. I hope other mommies have some clever ideas.

Not much help, but know you're not alone!

  • I am in this same boat! I thought it would be easy since I am a SAHM, but it's still such a balancing act. I finally got some housework accomplished today, so hopefully I will feel less pressured to clean and more inclined to work out tomorrow.

Also, maybe this is just me, but some days it is so hard to squeeze in a shower that I don't want to work out and get smelly. :p

  • I felt the same. I've only got a few minutes here and there with my needy LO, and those moments are often filled by running around grabbing laundry, or filling/unfilling the dishwasher.

I was on Pinterest one night and saw some quick fast burn workouts. I pinned a bunch of those so I could switch it up and not get bored. I'm on day 3 of those, and I just do them when I have a second. I've even found that I can do longer ones if I do them in front of DD because she seems to be entertained watching me do jumping jacks, peek-a-boo while I do crunches, make faces while I plank...little things like that. Trying to make my workouts fit my new lifestyle, and I hope they are just as effective (they feel like they are anyway, squats holding a 18lbs baby kills my thighs!).

  • I am a SAHM mom, but what's finally working for me is to get up at 6am, do a high-intensity 20 minute video (I like 30 Day Shred), and then shower before my husband leaves for work.  We put the kids to bed at 8:30pm so that they usually sleep until at least 7am.  I've resigned myself to the fact that getting to the gym is just not going to happen at this stage in my life.

Now I just need to figure out how to not binge on junk food as soon as the kids go down for their afternoon naps.  Then I might actually start to lose some weight!!!

  • While I've lost all of my baby weight things are just not the same if you know what I mean.  And before I got pregnant I could have stood to lose about 10 lbs...so I would like to lose that.  But...I feel like it is impossible to find time to workout.  I start getting ready for work at 6.  I am NOT a morning person..so the thought of getting up earlier about kills me.  Not to mention there are still some nights LO wakes up once or twice.  My husband is a teacher and a varsity football coach so doesn't get home until 8 or later.  After a full day of work and then making dinner and taking care of my little one at night...I'm just exhausted!  I know I need to find time and make it a priority...maybe someday that will happen :)
  • Well, my diet is fairly restricted so all the foods that I was over-eating...ice cream, cheese....are now off limits.  So I've been eating healthy and fewer calories overall.

As for working out, my arms are looking more tone than they have in years from carrying DD around.  And I frequently do squats while I'm holding DD to pick things up.

I ran before I got pregnant but really haven't started back yet.  With my diet being so restricted I'm worried that too much exercise will wear me down because I am not eating enough to replace the calories burned.  But I'm walking a few times per week which both DD and I love.

  • I could have written this... I've come to the realization its mainly lack of motivation. During my free time the last thing I want to do is work it out... More like sit on the couch and zone out. I do have a gym at work that I could use during my lunch break but in the last week I've had so much to do at work ice just been eating at my desk and worked right through them.

  • Yep, especially since I pump at work 3x including at lunch, which is the only time I could consistently have some activity.

In terms of creative ideas to fit it in, sit ups during baby's tummy time, taking the stairs, walk really fast when walking somewhere, stretching and other little exercises during conference calls at work.

  • It's twice as hard to lose weight after baby as it was before! I did join Stroller Strides and having other moms to not only work out with but count on makes all the difference in this battle!!
  • I have a mommy-and-me walking group that I do once a week (and sometimes I feel like that's my only exercise, but it's something!).  I love it, because you don't have to feel guilty or like you have to apologize for your LO if they're fussy, because in 5 minutes it'll probably be another person's LO!  Plus I've started doing what I call "baby workouts".  I do bicep curls holding LO horizontally, pushups with her laying on the floor under me, squats while holding her, leg lifts with her on my legs....etc.  I just sort of make things up.  It's great because she's all smiles/giggles while I'm doing it plus I'm getting my heartrate up.  Plus we occasionally partake in the impromptu dance party in the living room!
  • I have started getting up at 5AM to do the 30 day shred or a 20 min zumba dvd.  It is the only time I have a quiet house and DH and LO are still sleeping.  Then I shower and get ready for the day.  I only did it once last week I am trying to build up to at least 3 times a work week.  DH is starting to slow down at work so willl hopefully be in before 8pm now to help out in the evenings.  So that should help me out.  Before it got colder out I would pick her up from daycare and put her in the stroller and we would take a 45 minute walk before going home.

  • I agree. I love working out with other moms. Makes it more fun, love the accountability, and it's not as boring! I work out at home but am part of challenge groups along with many moms. We keep eachother accountable and it's fun! If you or any other mom is interested in joining one of these challenge groups let me know!
  • When my daughter turned 9 months I felt it was time to start losing the 20 pounds I needed to lose.  So what I did was called my local Jazzercise studio. At the time I could not afford the membership and asked if there was anyway I could get a discount and they offer a free membership with unlimited classes for babysitters for the day care.  So once a week I watch the kids in the day care room for one hour in exchange for a free membership.  I hate the gym but love jazzercise because its all dance, easy steps to learn and they incorporate weight training, plus they have the day care so my little one can socialize with the other kids.  The other thing i did was i joined Loseit.com its a free service on line where it gives you a calorie budget for the day according to how much weight you want to lose.  you can even put in your recipes on the site so you can customize it for what you eat.  It also tracks your workouts so jazzercise is considered dance aerobics so you would add that in and the more you work out the more you can eat!  You can also have friends join the site to keep each other motivated.  10 1/2 months later i am down 20 pounds and 25 inches and to be honest it wasn't that hard because i still ate what i wanted as long as it was in my calorie budget and going to jazzercise has given me a chance to get out and meet new people and do something for me!  Good luck on your journey!
  • wow!  I have been feeling like this for an entire year.  It's as if I wrote this post! I was the go to person for motivation, diet and workout advice and now I find myself needing the help of others!  My problem is I gave birth to my first at 47 and what used to work for me before is not working for me now.  I was also told that if my hormones are not in balance I will not be able to lose weight despite a clean diet and exercise????

  • I love the new Zumba Core.  Even if I'm not doing everything exact I am still moving.  My son is 13 months and I lost 8 lbs in the last 2 weeks when I had a lot of trouble before.  Plus if baby likes to move like my son does, pick baby up and dance with baby!
