When would I need to know if LO is breech?

DD1 was frank breech, and I was given an emergency c/s because no one knew until I'd been in labor for over 8 hours. My OB said that there is a slightly increased risk of breech presentation if your previous child was. They are willing to do a 3rd trimester u/s to check position at whatever point I would like. I am not sure when I should have it done.

I don't want to do it too early when she still has plenty of time to flip, but I want to allow enough time to try to turn her if it's necessary, Any thoughts? I am really trying for a VBAC this time around and don't want to pushed into a second c/s based on poor positioning.

    IMO any care provider worth their weight should be able to tell the gross position of a fetus with palpitations. Maybe not to the point of knowing what sort of breech positioning or if there's a nuchal hand but certainly cephalic or podalic positioning.

    Personally I'm not against u/s but if you shy away from them, I'd consent to it only if they suspect breech presentation and I'd do it around 33 or 34 weeks to give you time to try various techniques to turn baby. However, depending on the type of breech position, I might still ask for a TOL as breech babies can turn while in labor for multipara.

    I'd be doing spinning babies exercises throughout pregnancy though. And I'd probably see a chiro as well.

    My csection was for breech presentation too.  DD had been heads down at 38 weeks, then flipped.  I personally think I would wait until the end for the u/s.  But I do see PP point of having it earlier, gives you a chance to do what you can to flip the baby.

    Any chance you can do 2 u/s in the 3rd trimester? My OB checked at 34 weeks (was breech), and also did a quick one the day before the C/S to make sure. Honestly though, I could tell myself he was breech myself the entire time so didn't need either of the u/s.

    I personally would not worry about an ultrasound unless your doctor thinks the baby is breech from palpating your belly, and it is close to your EDD.  And just wanted to throw this out there, but ECV (external cephalic version) is safe for VBAC moms.

    here's a guide to figuring out baby's position based on where the heartbeat is found.

    it isn't 100% but it's very close and should be able to cnfirm your OBs guess from palpation, which a good OB should be able to do.

     I would recommend doing spinnngbabies exercises for every pregnant woman ASAP since you have a hiatory of breech. They won't hurt anything and should on,y help get baby into a good position.

    Maybe even see a chiropractor, mine has straightened my hips out and I feel so much better.  

     I wouldn't worry about breech until 36-37 weeks,  DD flipped from breech at 38 weeks discovered the moening I went in for my C/S so I'd do what I could to minimize the chances of breech and then if something makes me suspect breech do an u/s around 36 weeks and have a ECV if necessary.

    Thank you so much for the replies. I am a little gunshy about going just by feel. With DD, I saw 4 different OBs between 36 40 weeks, and they all said she was head down. My pedi, on the other hand, said that for her to have such severe hip dysplasia, she must have been breech for quite some time. I would rather be certain thus time.

    I will definitely look into the Spinning Babies and other link. Thanks again!

    DD was breech and my provider missed it until my 39 week appointment. 

    This time, I asked them to verify positioning at 36 weeks.  It was early enough for me to feel confident that if I had to schedule a version he would still be small enough to move, but also far enough along that if he was head down or head's up, he most likely wouldn't turn on his own.  But, my midwife first confirmed externally and then pulled in the u/s machine just in case. He is thankfully head's down, and still seems to be that way!

    My OB realized my DS was breech at 28 weeks and I had weekly appointments with ultrasounds every time.  :)  He just wanted to check to see when/if he would rotate.  I asked about the possibility of a version around 34 weeks or so, but the way my son was sitting, my OB wasn't comfortable doing it.  My OB is the best in the area and performed the very first version in our town a very long time ago...so he knows his stuff.  My son was totally unside down, both feet at my cervix, head stuck under neath my ribs (yea...ouch)!  I figured he knew more than me...so I accepted it and just prayed my son would turn on his own, but he didn't.  We planned a c section at 39 weeks, but I went into labor at 38 weeks and had a section.  It wasn't an emergency one though, thank goodness. 

    So just see what your OB office is willing to do.  Good luck...hope I am able to have a VBAC one day as well!
