Multiples

Reaching milestones later than usual

The boys are seven months and some change today (they were 37 week-ers) G is rolling back to front and has been for about a month, only recently did he start doing it very frequently, and rolling front front to back is no where in sight. The bigger problem is that A is not rolling at all! He will lay on his side, but when it comes to actually flipping on his stomach be flat out refuses even if we try to help. I've already gotten in touch with the early childhood department in my county to have him assessed, but they do seem to be meeting their other big milestones on time. My pediatrician had commented that sometimes multiples reach their milestones later than singletons, is this true? Has this been anyone else's experience?  TIA

Re: Reaching milestones later than usual

  • You've probably already considered this, but this is my thought - Maybe he doesn't like being on his stomach at all?  I'd try putting him on his tummy frequently and see if he makes any effort to roll front to back first, in order to get off his tummy.  Not every kiddo rolls in the same direction first.

FWIW - My singleton was later on every physical milestone.  He rolled around 7 months, crawled around 9-10 months, and walking between 14-15 months.  Now he can't be stopped!

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

Last ditch FET resulted in BFP, and identical twin girls!

Yes, you are exactly right. Thanks for the response. He does really hate being on his stomach (as does his brother), but when we do tummy time, he makes no attempt to roll stomach to back either. They both just start screaming after 5 minutes. Then they plant their faces into the blanket/carpet, hold their arms at their sides and there is no calming them down for what seems like an eternity.

  • DS refused to roll in either direction. He was late, I'd have to look in his baby book to see when, but I want to say it was 8 months or so, he could sit up before he would roll. He was in PT for something unrelated and she worked really hard with him trying to get him to roll, but he just refused. Then it was like a switch flipped and one day he just started rolling in both directions. my twins were 6 weeks early & I have been told that there could be some delays based on their prematurity as well as because they are twins.

  • I had my girls evaluated around 7 months because of some concerns, mainly because neither of them were bearing any weight on their legs. They both started a week before the eval. Little stinkers :). The eval. ended up being reassuring for me. Even though neither of them qualifed for services, I was given some really helpful tips to help increase muscle tone and core strength.

  • A is behind O on almost everything.  I mean he just really started putting things in his mouth.  I am worried about him too but the ped said he is just doing things on his own time table.  I don't know though, I still worry.

But I also know some babies just don't care to roll.  My niece never did and she did everything else fine and has no issues now.

  • Mine are 5 1/2 and while neither of them really roll on purpose, they are doing other things that seem within the 'normal' range.  They will sit up for a few seconds, they don't have great balance but in the last week or so they don't just fall forward as soon as I sit them up.  If you are concerned I would bring it up with the pedi but otherwise I think it is totally expected for multiples to be a little 'behind'.  :)

  • IMO it seems a little early especially if the pediatrician doesn't seem concerned...mine have been late with everything but I feel like as long as they are progressing (even if it's not according to a book's timeline) that I am happy.  Plus even though it might not seem like much they were about a month early so they are really only 6 months old....If you are still concerned at the next pedi appointment I would get a referral then.
