2nd Trimester

~Rant~ Stupid Lady at Work

I work in a relatively small office.  There are a few different departments that are in my building, and we all share the same lunch/break room.  Today, I was in the break room heating up my lunch, and I was on the phone with someone, telling them about my most recent u/s.  (In short, my blood pressure bottomed out during the u/s, I felt a little sick during the u/s and had to take a couple breaks--this is really all I said about the u/s incident).

Anyhow, during this conversation, some lady whom I've never spoken to before looked directly at me and said very loudly, "We're at lunch!"   I had no clue what she was referring to about my conversation since it wasn't graphic at all.  Then again, she said "We're at lunch!  We're at lunch!!"  Then turned to someone else, rolled her eyes and said "She just doesn't get it".  I just ignored her and went on with my conversation.  But seriously??  I really don't think I said anything offensive or too personal....or maybe I really don't get it.  Personally, I think she can just go eat a hot bowl of d!cks, but I bit my tongue when she had her little outburst.  End of rant, I feel better already.

  • I would have looked at her quizzically and asked "who are you?".  It puts people in their place to realize that they make absolutely no impact on you.

  • Wellll, in her defense, some people are really sensitive to medical talk, especially if they're trying to eat.  It probably doesn't bother most but "blood pressure" may make some people really queasy.

  • Weird. The only thing I can think of is when we're eating out and there'S someone in the restaurant talking on their cell phone and it bugs the crap out of me. Maybe that's what she meant by "we're at lunch" - like "go talk on your cell phone somewhere else?" Still, even if that was what she meant, there are better ways to get your message across.

    Haha! Awesomeness.

I would've said, "And I'm on the phone, could you stop interrupting?" and then maybe throw in the "Who are you?"

    People are idiots.

I understand that in a restaurant situation.  In the building I work in, half of the people who work here are in a call center environment, and the break room is one of the "safe" zones for cellphone usage.  Maybe she just really didn't like the u/s talk, but she didn't have to be so rude as to just bark the same three words at me.  An excuse me at least would have been nice.

I've noticed that people talk louder when they are on the phone then when in conversation, maybe that was the case?

I would hope not.  It's not like I was trying to make the whole conversation everyone's business, and I was standing a fair distance away from her in a somewhat crowded and noisy room.

At my place of work, the break room is one of the few places where cellphones can be used by many people and therefore it is not uncommon to see many people using their phones in that area.  I wasn't the only person on the phone at that time, either.

  • I know some people are trying to play the devil's advocate with this woman, but I think she's just a big giant douche-bag with poor communication skills. Clearly, you did not get her point so perhaps she could have MORE POLITELY stated why she was upset with you talking on your phone or your conversation about nasty, disgusting ultrasounds(sarcasm). Personally, I don't get this, I work in an ER and can chow down while people discuss pretty much anything...but that's just me.

That was my initial reaction. While I don't think her response was appropriate, I also don't think it's really cool to talk about any bodily function or medical situation in a place designated for eating food.

I hope you never eat in a hospital cafeteria, for your own sake. I've had my fair share of bowel movement and blood transfusion discussions overheard while trying to eat when I was visiting my mother in the hospital.

It's disgusting, but what's even more disgusting is rude people when you're on the phone, heating up your lunch, doing nothing wrong. On your break, furthermore.

  • She was being a douche. People are too sensitive.

  • You should have stripped down and asked her to check whether your cervix had started to dilate.
