Scared of standing on own/walking

Hey everyone!  I have not been on here in forever due to craziness.  However, I wanted to come back and get some advice from all of you wonderful mothers.  My son just turned 14 months today.  He has no desire to stand on his own, pull himself up, walk, anything like that.  To me, it almost seems like he is scared or that it hurts him to do it.  When I try to have him stand and lean against the couch he pushes all of his weight against me so that he does not have to do it.  Also, when I try to stand him up in front of me on the ground he lifts his feet up so that he cannot do it.  What does all of this mean?  Is there anything I can do to help him? At his one year appointment the pedi told me that if he was not doing anything by his next appointment she was going to suggest an early interventionist.  This makes me so sad and scared.  He was a late crawler.  He did not even start that till right after his one year birthday.  Please help moms, I am freaking out.

Re: Scared of standing on own/walking

  • My daughter didn't crawl until around 9-10 months, and she was 13 months before she took her first steps.  So if he didn't start crawling til a year, he might need another month or so before he's ready.

How does he feel about walkers or push-toys? I got my daughter a little toddler walker/wagon thing from ikea (best $20 I ever spent!) and you can adjust the tightness of the wheels so it doesn't move out from under them too fast.

  • I agree with the person above me. If you don't have one already, you should buy your LO a push toy. But, also, please don't worry too much. Every baby is different and yours might walk closer to 18 months. It doesn't mean anything is wrong, it just means that your LO isn't ready yet.

  • Don't worry! LJ still isn't walking. Some babies just aren't ready for that independence yet. I was having a freak fest earlier this week about it and broke down. A lady I used to nanny for reminded me the LJ is a very laid back baby. She's very content with just sitting on the floor playing and if she wants to get somewhere she knows that she can crawl just as quickly. Do not rush him to walk, he just may not be ready. Ofcourse, by 18 months if he isn't showing any progress at all I would be concerned. It's fine mama, this isn't a competition so don't rush him. Give him time to learn and explore and he'll figure it out!

  • My baby is 15 months and still not walking.

She started crawling at 13 months, and pulling herself up shortly after. We're still nowhere near standing unassisted, let alone walking. We have been doing physical therapy once a month she turned one and I feel that's helped her a lot. Have you looked into PT for your son? Maybe it would help him too?

Also, DD2 has push toys, but they are still a little too fast for her. If I stand her up against a kitchen/dining chair though, she will happily push it until she hits a wall. Other favourite "non-push toys" include her big box of Mega Blocks and her highchair. All this to say that push toys will come in handy, but maybe not right away.

    Good luck!

  • G has been walking about a month and half now...but he was kinda scared as well.  My mom got him one of those push things PP was talking about that you set the wheels for how fast you want it to go.  This REALLY helped him.  Now he is running all over!  I would worry yet Mama.
