Adoption

New

Hi Everyone,

I am new to this, new to adoption and new to *hopefully* becoming a mom. Anyways as I said I am new to this so please bear with me...

I have always wanted to adopt. My husband and I have talked it through and he understands and is completely on board with it now. We recently became financially able to start discussing it as we now have our own company and are buying a house in Westchester, NY rather than living in an apartment so now we are thinking maybe this is a good time...?

Ok so my question is where do you feel is the best place for me to start? I have been looking around this blog for a while and I have also been looking through a couple of local state adoption sites but it's all a lot of information and I can't help but feel a tad overwhelmed?

Please go easy on me as I am very new...

  • Welcome! Plenty of other newbs on this board, so don't be intimidated. Check out the FAQs at the top of the board for the basics on adoption... once you've done that, come on back and ask us anything specific!

It definitely is overwhelming to get started ? you're not alone there!

  • Ohh sorry I never even seen that...my bad! haha always good to know though that we're not alone. We know that we want to do Government adoption as it seems to fit our expectations :)

We are in NY but willing to get a child from any state although I would prefer one from around NY as I wouldn?t want to take them far away from what they know on top of everything else...especially as they may be in school with friends and loved ones. I just want to make it as easy for them as possible.

Anyone done Government adoption...in NY preferably?

Has anyone found any difficulties with being self-employed and still showing they have enough time, dedication and cash to support the addition of a child?

Also we are both in our early 20?s so do you think this will be a hindrance to our process? Are we likely to get negatively judge due to this? I am mature beyond my years and married so surely those two would cancel out the former?

So many questions but not sure what to ask you know? I just want to dip my toe in, in a positive matter and see what the reaction towards us and our situation would be :) so glad there is a forum like this though! Oh and thanks for the welcome I appreciate it :D

  • I am also self-employed, and we were required to get a letter of recommendation from our accountant that says that we have a stable income from my design studio. I'm sure whatever agency you go with will be able to direct you more.

  • Welcome to the board!!  As a PP said, adoptuskids.org is a great resource, if you click on "For Families" they have a guide on how to adopt.  If you go to the New York State website there is also information specifically on adopting from New York.  There is also a separate photolisting if you are interested in waiting children.

I think self-employed is fine as long as you can show that your finances are stable.  As far as working I know there are many foster parents and adoptive parents that work full-time.

I think as long as you are over 21 you should be fine in New York, but it might say on the New York state website.

    Good luck and welcome again!!

  • Hi! I'm new as well!

I have found www.adoptivefamilies.com to be a great resource as well - along with the Dave Thomas Foundation.

    Best of luck!
