International Bumpies

Introductions - American living in Denmark

Hi!  I just saw this new Board!  Awesome that there are some bumpies awake when I am awake.  : )

My hubby and I moved to Denmark 4 years ago to just experience a different culture and to travel more on this side of the world.

I work at a dairy company here (Arla), and have one son that is 18 months, and now I am on maternity leave again, pregnant with twins, which should be here around New Years.

I had my first child here, and my twins will be born here too.

Looking forward to sharing experiences with y'all!

Re: Introductions - American living in Denmark

  • Welcome! I'm an American living in Germany with my German DH, our 1.5 year old daughter, and in Feb DD2 will be arriving. I've been here a total of almost 10 years now, and I have to say that I really enjoy the benefits!! I hope you're enjoying your maternity leave! :-) It would be unimaginable in the States to go on maternity leave in November when you're not due until Dec/Jan! :-)

BFP1: DD1 born April 2011 at 34w1d via unplanned c/s due to HELLP, DVT 1 week PP

BFP3: DD2 born Feb 2013 at 38w4d via unplanned RCS due to uterine dehiscence

  • Hi, I am also new to this board also. I am an American living with my Swedish DH in Sweden. I am also pregnant with our first and going to deliver in Sweden. We just lived here a year so everything is still new to me including having a child in a different healthcare system!
  • Good afternoon everyone!

DH and I are both American and have lived in Scotland for almost 7 years now. Expecting our first in December and have just over 2 weeks left at work before I go on maternity leave for just over a year - am really excited about it! I feel very, very lucky to have gone through all of this on the NHS and with all the benefits I get here.

  • Look at all these Scandinavians!  Now I feel like I need to get pregnant, because all the Scandinavians are hanging out on the Bump instead of the general international board.

...Although, I'm talking about Scandinavia, so I shouldn't be surprised.  The first questions my colleagues asked when I moved here were "When are you planning to get pregnant?" and "You know this is a great place to have kids?"

  • Hi Everyone! I am a native Californian living in New Zealand with my NZ Hubby. We have an almost 2yr old and a 3 month old. Glad to see this board on here!

I never got the question but Swedes tend to be a little reserved, especially in personal matters. However, I do know that Sweden has one of the highest birth rates in Europe...I see baby strollers all over the place. The generous family leave is definitely a bonus in Scandinavians. We did wait to have a child because of the generous family leave.

I'm also happy to see others in Scandinavia. I just met the only other American in our town yesterday, so it can be a little isolating, but the Swedes have been very friendly and welcoming our move here.

    Wha?

I had to look that up, because I couldn't imagine it was so terribly different there than in Denmark. And I can't seem to find any source that says it is. o_O

My source was quite a few years ago when I looking into info on Sweden, so maybe it is older news. I sure it is not the highest. Sorry, I never meant to be dogmatic about it.

  • Hi, Amber! Good to see you here. Glad you found the board! I'm here in and out.

I don't know why I always thought your DH was Danish. Being so blonde and beautiful you both probably get mistaken for Danes all of the time I would imagine.
