I'm so frustrated...our hospitals LC is always OOT at conferences...I called her twice last week and never heard back. The back up one never got back with me either. I call again yesterday and she says she needs to meet with me tomorrow (today). She said to call her when I knew what our feeding schedule is...I've called her twice, DD needs to eat in the next 30 minutes at the latest. It's a thirty minute drive to see her as it is if she's at the reg hospital (but she my be at the closer one...that's why i was to call her). I'm really frustrated at the lack of support. I guess I have to go to the OB now who will automatically throw drugs at me and provide me with no support!
Re: WWYD? Re LC and possible thrush
I forgot to add they suspect thrush or possibly a bacterial infection. I just left the OBs nurse a message too.
That sounds really frustrating. Here's my advice for thrush (please note, I am not a LC, but I struggled with thrush several times with DS, and this is the regimen given to me by my LC):
Following every nursing session, rinse nipples in a white vinegar solution (I used it full strength, just because I'm lazy & figured it would work faster). Let your nipples completely air dry before getting dressed again. Like pp said, if you're using nursing pads, change them frequently & wash the reusable ones on the hottest temp possible. You can also use OTC Lotrimin cream on your nips - just rinse it off before feeding LO again. Make an appt with LO's pedi - if it's thrush, LO will likely start to exhibit symptoms (white patches in the mouth/throat, extreme fussiness during/after feedings, bad diaper rash) and will need to be treated with nystatin. If it's really bad, they'll prescribe diflucan, but that should be an absolute last resort, since long-term diflucan use can cause liver damage. Sterilize pump parts & bottle nipples after every use as well (the medela microwave sterilizer bags are great for this purpose, FYI). Start taking a probiotic, too, to get the yeast in your body back in balance.
If it's bacterial, you're going to need an antibiotic.
PS - Your pediatrician may have a recommendation or references for local LCs, as well, so it's worth a call to his/her office anyway.
