Re: How do you choose a hospital?

  • 1st you need to find an OB/GYN.  Your dr usually has certain hospitals he/she will deliver in.  If you have multiple options, tour the hospitals and select your fave.  Some choose hospitals based on NICU, birth plans, room size, nurse staff and overall comfort.

  • We looked at hospitals first, then chose our doctor.

When we were looking at hospitals - we looked at proximity to home and work, classes offered (free vs. priced), staff experience/awards, general procedures, cost, and hospital amenities.

We toured 2 hospitals and pretty much both were pretty similar. We had another tour lined up, but had a 'gut feeling" about hospital #2, so we went with it.

We did it this way because we didn't have a specific doctor that we wanted to work with - so that really didn't sway our decision.

I also asked friends/co workers and family where they had delivered recently and how their overall experience was.

  • I found my OB first and she only delivered at one hospital. I was more concerned about the long term care aspect during OB treatment than the 'facilities' but I also lucked out- Texas Health Dallas is a great hospital.

    All of this.

We had NO clue who to go with, so a co-worker of my husband (with the same insurance plan) gave us the name of his wife's OB. We've been decently happy with her, and the hospital we're going to be delivering at, Baylor Downtown. I will say, though, that as NICE as the rooms are, they are on the smaller side. However, we're very satisfied with the natural methods they tend to hold important, as we're hoping for a completely med-free natural birth.
