Any tips for kids who don't get the sippy cup?

I cannot for the life of me, get DS to drink out of a sippy cup. He loves them and wants to have them, but he just chews on them and bites the spout. This is what I've tried:

-A straw sippy cup

-A regular sippy cup

-Getting a crappy leaky sippy cup so he knows there is water, letting it drip in his mouth and then giving it to him to try to drink out of

-Shaking it in front of him like we shake the bottle so he sees there is liquid

-Drinking from it myself

-Tipping it up for him while he has it in his mouth

The next thing I will try is holding him like I am going to give him a bottle to see if he will instinctively suck on it. The reason I want him to learn so much is that he eats a lot of table food and I would like him to have some water to wash it down with. Ugh! He seems to catch on to everything so quickly but he just.doesn't.get.the.sippy.

Re: Any tips for kids who don't get the sippy cup?

  • Ugh!! I am in the same boat. I really need some help too!!
  • Aria does best if her sippy has handles. We got her this Avent one, and she does really well. Now that she's used to drinking from it, she'll use a non-handled sippy if she has to. (she still prefers handles)

Avent also has a "natural drinking" cup that I've been looking into. (and every time I think I'm going to buy it, I get side tracked, darnit!)

Oh, and while Aria will take her sippy cup just fine she absolutely refuses to hold her own bottle. I know she can, I've seen her do it... but if you happen to sneak it into her hands instead of her sippy and she realizes she's holding the bottle herself, she throws the bottle as far as she can, and screams until you hold it for her. It's lovely.

  • Laura loves her sippy cup (well, we call it a water bottle), but I don't think she ever drinks out of it. She just really likes to nom on the mouthpiece. At this point, we let her play with it like its a toy, and keep a little bit of water in it, just in case she catches on. What's super cute is that if she's got it, and you ask her, "is that your water bottle?", she'll put it up to her mouth. And not drink anything. Sigh.

  • I was thinking the same one as Lancyjo - the avent or Sassy grow up cup. It's like a real cup. Hayley get's her nuby sippy the best, and then she likes her playtex straw one (you squeeze it and the water goes up the straw so she learned to use it real easy). But she also likes to drink from my glasses/water bottles - so that might be easier for you.

  • Ditto the Avent cup here too. It seems like it's pretty close to a bottle's functionality, and DS loves his bottle, so he took to the sippy like a champ. I'm about to try a non-silicone spout with him - we'll see how it goes. But I do think this Avent sippy works well, at least it has for us. But the straw cup - no dice here.
  • We didn't do anything differently than what you have tried.  One day it just clicked.  We have the nuby one.  She still doesn't drink a lot but she is able to get some water out and at any rate she loves playing with it.

Oh, I did lean her high chair back just a bit.  Because she was having a hard time tilting back to get the water out.

  • Lucia gets it, but would still rather just chew on it. I'm trying to give it to her more often at meals and when we are playing, but if it's a time when I care that she actually gets a drink, I just let her drink out of my cup, or small plastic regular cups. It's the only way she gets a decent amount.

This is Ian's favorite cup.  He'll drink out of the Avent one, but prefers this Nuby one.  I started by just giving him the cup and mostly he'd just chew on it.  He was getting water in his mouth and would swallow it, but for the longest there was just lots of chewing.  One day, he just decided he was going to suck it.  And that was that!  I fill it all the way to the top so that he doesn't have to "tip" it so much.  I just kept giving it to him, when he'd eat, and let him do what he wanted to with it...and one day it just clicked.

This is Logan's favourite cup as well!  He gets excited when he sees it and I've started using it with formula to slowly wean him.

  • AJ doesnt get a regular sippy and won't hold his bottle, but boy does he love is straw cup. It took him a couple days to figure it out, but now he drinks out of it like a champ. Here is the one we have: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=10812771

  • The girls both love straw cups. Olivia has been using it for a while but Natalia just got the whole straw concept last week. Neither are big fans of other sippy cups. They'll drink of them if I hold them, but the straw ones they'll hold on their own.

  • I think it's a little early to worry about. Sippy cups are a toddler ( 12 months and up) thing to me.

  • Yes, I'll add, don't freak out if he's not drinking out of a cup.  I too think it's nothing to be "worried" about at this point.  And I just did it to give him something new to try.  He will only drink water/a little juice out of it...he will not drink his milk out of it!  I think the first time I actually tried was when he was sick and needing to be hydrated but didn't want milk, and won't drink anything but milk from his bottle.  I just kept giving it to him after that.

  • I am taking the lady parents solution on this one. I just sent the sippy cup to daycare and am asking them to work on it with her. I'm not really trying at home much in any real intention way. We offer it to her during dinner and she will sip from it if we hold the cup. Her best use comes in the bath. I have a little plastic (not closed top) cup that I put water in and during her bath I let her take sips out of it. She really likes it then- way more than at dinner. in the end though I think day care will deliver on this milestone.

  • try the Playtex straw cup - its designed for teaching this skill! DD loves hers and caught on right away.

  • Ava has the nuby cup that someone talked about above. if i give her water in it with meals and snacks she seems to just want to chew on it and barely drinks anything. one day i forgot to.bring a little to mil when she was babysitting, she put formula in the cup as it was the only option, ava sucked the whole 4 oz. down in no time flat, so some of the issue may be the water in the cup and not the cup itself.
