Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Belly button not closing

DD lost her cord two weeks ago and it was still oozing so the ped silvered it and two days later it reopened and they resilvered it.  I waited until last week to give her her first bath and then a couple hours later her belly button reopened.  The doc said no more baths and just clean the outer edges with alcohol...but it's still open! Just curious if anyone else has had issues....and it doesn't appear infected so not concerned just would like to properly wash her and not have to worry about it.

  • Babies don't really get that dirty. You don't need a full bath; just sponge bathe her (perhaps in front of a heater so she doesn't get cold) and keep applying the alcohol as per your doctor's orders. LO will be fine if she doesn't get a bubble bath every day. ;-)

  • He lost his cord at 2 weeks, exactly. His bellybutton didn't completely close until 5 weeks. We gave him sponge baths until it completely closed. If her doctor said no more baths, then I wouldn't continue to submerge her when you bathe her...just give her a sponge bath, it does the same job!
