Conflicting info at pedi about flu shot...wwyd?

DD got her first flu shot at her 12 month appointment. I understand that since she's never had one before that she has to get a 2nd one. The medical assistant told us that we have to come back for the 2nd shot in exactly 30 days, no more no less. When the Dr came in he told us that she could just get the 2nd one at her 15 month appt. I asked him if that was the case then why did the medical asst tell me exactly 30 days? He said well, on the record it's supposed to be 30 days but it's not going to make any difference if you wait until the 15 month appt.

So what were you told if your LO got the flu shot? and wwyd in this situation? Normally I would lean towards listening to the Dr. but I'm thinking in this case I might just take her at 30 days to be safe...

I'd believe a doctor over a medical assistant.  That said, the rule is at least 30 days.

The recommendation is to get the second one in 30 days, but it doesn't really make that much of a difference. I think DD got hers like a month and a half to 2 months after the first.

This is what I was originally thinking too but it just bothered me a little bit that he said "ON THE RECORD it's supposed to be 30 days..." KWIM?

I don't get the flu shot and I don't get it for DD.  However, I would think that your LO would be better protected if she got the shot sooner rather than later.  If she needs 2 doses for the shot to be effective I would try to get them both into her.

This is from the CDC website:

The first dose should be given as soon as vaccine becomes available.

The second dose should be given at least 28 days after the first dose. The first dose ?primes? the immune system; the second dose provides immune protection. Children who only get one dose but need two doses can have reduced or no protection from a single dose of flu vaccine.

If your child needs the two doses, begin the process early. This will ensure that your child is protected before influenza starts circulating in your community.

Be sure to get your child a second dose if he or she needs one. It usually takes about two weeks after the second dose for protection to begin.

According to that info. I would get the second dose sooner rather than later as your LO needs the 2nd dose to be fully protected.

I almost didn't even get the 2nd one for DS because it became a scheduling issue and the 1st shot gets them 80% immunity, but pedi encouraged me to get when we went for his next visit, which was about 2 months after his 1st one.

Ditto everyone else, it just has to be at least 30 days in between. DD2 had her first at her 12 month appt and her second about 5 weeks later.

DS just had his at his 15 mos. appt. I was planning on waiting until the 18th month appt(jan) but now after reading your posts I am thinking I should go back sooner. The nurse practitioner just said, I had to wait at least 30 days before getting the second. She said I should get the 2nd one when I can but I didn't get the whole spiel about the closer the better. I am going to think about this now.

I was told at least 30 days; over 30 wasn't an issue.

I was told at least 30-days after the first shot. Realizing that this is to increase her immunity to the flu, I scheduled the appointment as to close to 30-days after the first shot as possible. Next Monday is the day for the second shot.
