Need opinions... dr. measured baby to be huge!

Ok, this is really random but we went yesterday at 17.5 weeks for the follow up to our NT scan. Dr. said that they can estimate the baby's weight and length based on bone measurements. I'm hoping he just measured wrong because he said based on the measurements he estimated our baby is 8 oz and about 8 inches long.

WTEWYE says at 18 weeks baby averages 5 oz and 5 or 5.5 inches. DH is 6'1" and I'm 5'9" and I'm showing just a little but i doubt our baby is really that big... any thoughts?

Did your doctor have any concerns about the baby's size?

Nope - he said everything looked good and healthy... I didn't really think anything of it yesterday until I was reading WTEWYE this morning. He wasn't my regular OB since we did our NT with a perinatal specialist so hopefully my doctor can clarify at our next appointment in 2 weeks.

If your Dr isn't concerned, then I say you don't need to be concerned either.

u/s measurements aren't know for being precise (except earlier on in pregnancy, plus your baby will go through growth spurts, so chances are you will measure ahead/behind at some point.

Plus like Nanda said, it's not like you can do anything about it.

Still, if it does concern you, you can always bring it up with your Dr at your next appointment.

Fetal weight estimates are notoriously extremely unreliable. (I've been told that by numerous expert OBs that I use in my OB related cases.) Also, remember that the 5oz and 5.5 inches is an average.

I was told a week before delivering DS that he was a "good-sized" baby in the "9-pound range). Thankfully they were WRONG. He was 7 lbs., 10 oz. I wouldn't put too much stock in their estimate.

If it makes you feel any better, I just did my anatomy scan yesterday (at 17w5d) and my measurements were about the same. I've got the tall genes in the family and wondered if that was a factor too.

The doctors told both of us that we are having a healthy baby! I'm sure there is a lot of room for error in those measurement estimates, so I'm not worried. Congrats on a good appointment!

Thanks ladies! We aren't really concerned, I just found it a little weird... I also found other fetal growth charts and it looks like we are in normal ranges anyway.

I wouldn't worry. When I was PG with DD they kept telling me how big she was going to be. She was born at 38 weeks and was 6lbs 12oz. Even if she had been right on time she wouldn't have been as big as they were predicting.

This baby was measuring so big at the NT scan that the tech thought they might have dated my pregnancy wrong. Then I told her that we did fertility treatments so the dating is very precise. She said that the baby must just be big

FWIW, I don't put much stock in it. I'm 5'3" but DH is 6'2". DD is super tall for her age now, but was on the small side at delivery (38% for head size thank God!!) and I anticipate the same for this one. Those measurements are super unreliable!

If you're both tall baby might be on the bigger side but it's so hard to predict. DH is 6'2" and I'm 5'8" and DS was 21.25" and 9 lbs 1 oz. If your doctor wasn't worried I wouldn't put too much stock in WTE average size.

Truth. Babies can measure "ahead" one week and "behind" the next. Its just the beginning of their drive-you-crazy-ness. Plus, WTEWYE is the debbil.

At my 18 week a/s with DS they estimated him at 10 oz. he was only 6lbs 7oz when he was born at 37w5d, I wouldn't be too worried. He's still a peanut too

On the flip side of this, I was told that my baby would be in the 9lb range and she ended up being 10lbs 6oz. Its very hard for the doctors to know this stuff just by the uterus measurements or even an ultrasound. Unless they are actually in the womb measuring, everything is going to be a guestimation.

I really wouldn't be concerned unless your doctor gives you reason to be.
