Terrible heartburn

Any remedies/suggestions for heartburn/reflux?  I ate some stir fry yesterday that didn't agree with me and I have been misrable since last night, threw up twice this morning.  It feels lie my stomach is on fire, at some points I've felt the burning up through my throat to the very back of my mouth.  My SIL advised against TUMS, because they gave a friend of hers kidney stones.  TIA!

Anniversary DS was born 11/30/12... so in love :)

Re: Terrible heartburn

  • My dr put me on Prevacid for long acting acid reflux. For temporary relief I use Gaviscon. They are these chewable tablets that turn into a foam and they put a layer of foam where the stomach meets the esophagus. The orginal flavor is nasty, but the cherry is somewhat tolerable. Just make sure you check with your DR prior to taking anything.

  • Drink a glass of Milk it really helps my heartburn. Hope it helps
  • My Dr gave me the ok to take Zantac 75, so I usually take one before bed. I haven't had any problems with Tums either, so I will usually have one if reflux wakes me up during the night.

  • Milk helps. I take tums if it gets really bad. If your SIL's friend had tums related kidney stones then my guess is that she was eating them very regularly.

  • Milk helped in the beginning, When that stopped working I switched to tums. When I complained to my OB about them not working she said she was worried that I may get kidney stones, as I was having 3 a day, almost every day. She then put me on zantac 75 and it's been great so far. Hopefully that will last me either until he drops or is born.  I get acid reflux up the back of my throat and feel like a dragon sometimes :(   I guess this is my trade off for no morning sickness!
  • Many docs (mine included) actually encourage the use of Tums, as they aid in heartburn and also give extra calcium!  I take 2-6 per day (depending on need)... Have taken them pretty regularly for the last 10 years, and haven't had any problems.  I think your sister's friend is a very rare case!  (Or, as another poster mentioned, she was eating a bottle a day!)

This.  Although I've read that milk helps to temporarily relieve the heartburn but then actually makes it worse due to the lactic acid.

  • I eat Tums pretty regularly and haven't had any issues. They provide relief. Icecream helps too :)

  • A big glass of milk is the only thing that gives me any relief!

  • Best thing ever was getting a prescription from my doctor. I wouldn't sleep because of indigestion and reflux and now life is good again!

  • Tums was a joke for me. I had problems before pregnancy and after I hit 3rd tri it kicked up to a whole new level of awful. I just made the switch to prevacid at the Dr's insistence actually. I went from Zantac 75 daily pre-pregnancy to Zantac 150 twice a day and that STILL wasn't doing it.

So far the prevacid is working wonders for me!

  • Take the tums. Just because a friend of a friend got kidney stones does not mean you will. I also agree w/milk/dairy products.

  • I swear by ginger tea.. I drank it once when I thought I was dying and it made the pain go away. Before I became pregnant I also took probiotics. Both help tremendously with digestion and help curb indigestion
  • Zantac 75 saved my life, I swear...

Tums have added calcium, and too much calcium intake can cause kidney stones in some people. My uncle used to get calcium kidney stones, but his vice was ice cream, not TUMS. If you don't eat an extremely calcium rich diet on a regular basis, I would say give the TUMS a try. Unfortunately, I've had to eat them like candy for both this pregnancy and my last pregnancy due to the intense heartburn. GL!

These meds are on my doctor's approved list for heartburn: Maalox, Mylanta, Tums, Riopan, Titralac, Gaviscon.

  • About a month ago, my heartburn was so bad that drinking water hurts as it went down.  so i researched on home remedy as well as medicines.  i tried milk, which was okay as i swallow but not the reflux afterward.  then i found someone mentioning in a forum about sparkling water.  So, I got it and I never looked back.  I drink smoe after meals or when I feel the onset of a heartburn attack.  That day, I went to Costco and bought myself a box of 24... I have not left home without it since.
