Worried Mum !

My DS at his 4th month check-up had a drop in his head circumference growth - while his weight ( was always at 50 percentile ) & Height ( was always at 75 percentile ) remained constant. At his 2 month check-up his head was at 50 percentile, but now it dropped to 25 percentile :( Is there something I am doing wrong ? Could I improve this anyhow ? Otherwise he is very active, has good movement - hand / eye , holds up his head well, is able to sit supported etc - all these tests he was given a green by doc

  • If your Dr didn't show concern, I wouldn't fret. DS1 always fluctuated at his appts. Started put really high and now he's in the 3050 range
depending on what measurement they are taking.

On a side note, no you cannot do anything to get your Childs head to grow, lol :

  • The percentage system is so flawed.  Maybe it was even a poor measurement by the nurse?  I stopped paying attention to the percentages since they seem to fluctuate so much.  I would try not to worry!

This! So many of the charts and measurements seem outdated now. For instance, the %iles that DD gets are really high for length and weight, but then I see all of the moms of most babies her age post stats that are even bigger so there's no way that all LOs are so much bigger than average!

DD's head has always been in the 25th %ile according to our pedi, even though the rest of her seems to be increasing at a much faster rate (90th for length, and 75th for weight). I can definitely tell that her head is on the smaller side, but it doesn't look disproportionate or anything + it really helps her with physical developments like holding it up well, sitting, standing, etc!

    I wouldn't worry :)

  • Like others have said, I wouldn't worry if your Dr isn't. My doc told us that the difference between 25th and 50th percentile for head circumference is an eighth of an inch. So the slightest difference in measurement could account for it

  • Unless it is bc it is getting flat in the back then I wouldn't worry.
