I don't think intricate = better. Her costume wouldn't go over well in my social group. It's just meh to me. You should totally go as the pink haired girl from LazyTown or the candy cane guy from Candyland.
What does this woman do for a living? I barely have time to wipe my own a$$ and certainly no time for $hit like this! Are you sure she didn't just rent the thing?
Penny, YGPM. It's a photo (don't feel comfortable posting it since it's me with a friend and I don't think it's fair to her to post it here) to help inspire you to make good use of that pink wig. You're far more creative than the girl in the photo, so I bet you can do something amazing!
I don't think her costume is that cool....no offense. I like ones people put some creativity into....
I hunted for a picture everywhere but couldn't find it....I will have to check the computer when I get a chance. But we used to go to a Halloween party and every year tried to making "shocking" costumes. My SO went as a giant hand doing "the shocker" and there was poo and a piece of corn on the pinky. One of his friends parents were there and she told them he was the Hamburger Helper man because she didn't want to explain "the shocker" to her parents. The following year, I got soft netting and white quilt padding....and sewed it into a giant maxi pad with wings. I wore a red wig. Then I took dark red and brown craft paint and bloodied the maxi pad. In the center, I put a big "i". I was an iPad. It was the year iPads came out and some were laughing about it having "pad" in it so I took that and ran with it!
Re: How can I compete?
It has to be rented, which isn't that creative..IMO.
I much prefer homemade, quirky costume...but I did just dress up as a hipster hobo, complete with a QR code as my begging sign

That was my costume a couple years ago. So much fun!
