Baby Names

baby boy name help!!

We found out last month that we are having a boy!  DH and I both really wanted a boy and are thrilled.  Problem is we are at opposite ends of the spectrum on names.  I am Italian and would like him to have an Italian sounding name.  DH does not want him to sound like he is "off the boat".  This includes names of my off the boat relatives like, Anthony, Dominic, Vincent etc...On the other hand I do not want to use anything that is too trendy or has been in the top 20 of SSA lists such as John, Daniel, Michael, Joseph, Matthew, etc...

We started looking at not so popular American, as well as Irish, Scottish or Jewish names and have nixed Hudson, Rory, and Kellen. Owen has distant potential.

We have also checked our family trees.  His is full of Johns and Josephs and mine is full of people "off the boat".

One thing we agree on is a middle name of James or Francis (both family names).

Suggestions are welcomed and encouraged!

TIA!

Re: baby boy name help!!

  • Love both James and Francis... our potential boy names are Owen and Rory... but DH is Irish with a Mc ln, so they will flow well.  I'm half Italian and Anthony, Dominic & Vincent are really not off the boat names IMO.  It's not like using Marco, Rosario or Rocco.  I think I would revisit using those names and maybe his family name for a mn.  I don't know a Tony, Dominic or Vince that I don't like (and most were handsome, part Italian boys but definitely not off the boat)!  =)

I'd share this with your husband, it's the top names over the last 100 years. Anthony is #15, Vincent is #96. I wouldn't consider them off the boat at all. I'd ask him to compromise with something like Anthony James, or Vincent Francis.

  • I really would not consider those "off the boat" names.  They are fairly Americanized.  I have never met an un-handsome Anthony, Dominic, or Vincent.  I would consider Angelo, Lorenzo, Antonio much more true Italian.

DH is Italian and I l.o.v.e Italian names but they don't match his very English LN.  We are picking names that match our LN.

What is the background of your LN?  This would help for flow.

  • I love the name Dominic and wouldn't consider it an "off the boat" name. Dominic James or Owen James are nice!

  • I don't consider Dominic, or Anthony or Vincent, to be 'off the boat' all! I think they are all great. I also know more Dominics of French or Irish descent and a few Irish Vincents...no Italians though. Vincenzo is more off the boat to me.

What is your last name? Very Irish fns like Rory, etc sound odd to me with very Italian last names. What about Lucas/Luca, Raphael, or Leo? ETA Or Stefan! I love Stefan.

I should have said stereotypical not "off the boat".  Either way DH is flat out not a fan.

Our last name is English/Welsh starts with P and ends with D. 3 syllables.

    Thanks for the suggestions!
