Re: Names I admire

  • I only like Sophia, Ava and Emma from this list.  Unfortunately they are super popular.

I could get behind Alaina and Chloe (I assume you meant Chloe and not Chole).

Tyler is a boy name.  I like Tori/Tory as a nn for Victoria.

  • My phone really types crazy ! But Tyler recently I have a few parents I know that has name they daughters Tyler. Tyler to me is unisex. But thanks.for your input
  • Are these girl names? Are you planning on using Tyler as a girl name, or did your boy list get mixed up in there? I like Tyler- for a boy ONLY. I think it's really really bad on a girl.

For a girl I think Sophia, Ava, Emma, and Alaina are your best choices. Tory is nice as a nickname for Victoria but not as a name on its own.

I'm hoping Chole is a typo and you mean Chloe. I like Chloe a lot. C-hole looks stupid.

I don't know what Niyla is and don't care for the others.

If you think Tyler is unisex you are most definitely a minority. It is the #38 name for boys in the US and is not in the top 1000 names for girls. She would face a lifetime of 'your name is WHAT? Taylor?' and being mistaken for a boy. It was a bit more common in the past but Tyler is firmly back to the boys now.

  • I like Ava, Emma, and Nia.. the rest are NMS.

Did you mean Tyler as a girl name?  Since the rest are girl names, that's how it reads.  I generally like many boy names for girls (not sure that I'd use them, but like them), but really dislike Tyler for a girl.

  • I m just on this board because it's just for the hell of it. I already have my names picked out. Lol.I have twin girls and they names are Ariel Alaina. It's just to have fun and do see what's you guys inputs are. The funny thing is I know two females who has name they DD Tyler. You'll be surprise. I don't find nothing wrong with naming a girl Tyler. Anywho, thanks for the input.
  • So your saying Ariel is a boys name because of the spelling ???
  • What,do you mean by minority?
  • Ariel-meh
    Alaina-dislike
    Mackenzie--dislike
Sophia-I like even though it is popular
    Madison-Dislike
    Ava-It's okay
    Emma-I like it
Tyler-this is a boys name. I dislike using boys names on girls. People don't use girl names on boys so I don't see why they feel the need to use boy names on girls.
    Chole-Chloe? Yes I like Chloe
    Amy-Meh
    Nia-No
    Niyla-No
Tory- As a nickname for Victoria? Sure.

And why did you ask for "input" if you didn't want it.  Just because you anecdotally know a few girls named Tyler does not mean that it is all of a sudden a girl name.  Tyler is a boy name.  It is a top 50 name for boys and not on the charts for girls.  A few people who choose to give their daughter a masculine name do not all of a sudden make a name "unisex".

As for my input..  Emma, Ava, and Sophia are good but nothing I would use (too popular and just not my favorites).   They rest are not my style at all - borderline bad.

    1) If you already have them picked out then great but why are you seeking opinions. I typically don't seek opinions when my mind is made up.

    2) Please learn to use the quotes...it is difficult to figure out who you are responding to.

3)Tyler is typically used as a boys name. If you use it as a girls name or think of it as a girls name then you are in the minority. Meaning the majority of people use it as a boys name.

This!!  The majority of people think Tyler is a boy name, so you would be in the minority if you think it's a girl name.

Don't ask for input if you don't really want honest answers.

  • Yes, many of those names are really popular. I like Mackenzie (Kenzie for short)
  • Tyler is a boy name. MY DH's name, incidentally.

I like Sophia, Ava, and Emma despite their popularity.

Amy, Chloe, Alaina, and Madison aren't terrible, but they're NMS.

The others all get a thumbs down from me.

  • I only like Sophia, Ava, and Emma.

  • Ariel - NMS
    Alaina - I prefer Alana.
Mackenzie - NMS but I think Mack is a cute NN for a girl.
    Sophia - No.
Madison - Used to love this name but now it's just okay to me.
    Ava - No.
    Emma - Ok.
Tyler - I knew a girl in high school named Tyler. But it is a boys name.
    Chole - Chloe, yes.
    Amy - I like it.
    Nia - Love.
Niyla - I wouldn't even know how to pronounce it.
    Tory - No.

I know three grown up Tylers that are girls. They are all VERY preppy and grew up in really affluent families. I know of one baby girl named Tyler. I wouldn't think anything of a girl named Tyler and I don't think the name would be too much of an issue in Connecticut / Massachusetts. I'm sure in other parts of the country people might have issues with it- but I don't think it would get the side-eye in a  preppy north eastern suburb. (If the parents are big prepsters it will probably go over well with their friends.)

If you hate preppy/ rich kid names I can see disliking Tyler for a girl- but I don't think it's an odd choice for a girl. The name is NMS, but I don't think it's odd. Of course I also think that Ruby, Jade, and Opal are strippers- so there you have it! To each her own.

I love how people try to argue national numbers with "Well, I know THREE whole girl Tylers..."  Nobody is arguing that some people have naming styles that include giving masculine names to girls.  We get it.  It happens.  That doesn't change the fact that it's a MINORITY thing.  Get a clue.

I know a girl Tyler.  I knew her growing up, and was recently re-introduced to her as an adult.  I couldn't place her, but I knew she looked familiar.  Wanna know why I couldn't place her?  She doesn't go by Tyler.  She was re-introduced to me by her NN.

I wasn't arguing that naming a girl Tyler isn't a minority thing (hey-the 1% is a minority). I was arguing that it is acceptable in certain circles and if you don't know where the OP is coming from you can't make the assumption that a girl named Tyler would face a lifetime of being asked "You're name is WHAT?" As I mentioned all of the Tylers I know are really preppy and that is not something that is going to be revealed by national numbers.

My point was simply that while the vast majority of people hate the name Tyler on a girl it is acceptable amongst the pink and green set.

I'm sorry your friend dislikes being called "Tyler."
