Last year I bought 5 big bags of candy and we only had two trick or treaters. Fail. Guess who's a$$ grew that month??
My goal in purchasing candy is to have about 3 times as much as I'll need to hand out. I am thoroughly disappointed if I start running out of my favorite kinds.
depends on the kid...it is hard not to give the cuter kid more candy...hmmm...now I will be watching like a hawk how much candy hand out to DD...LOL....it could get ugly...."What you gave her one piece...are you saying my kid is ugly???" LOL

I think the more important question is what kind of candy you're handing out tomorrow night
I will immediately go out and buy whatever kind will make you show up at my door tomorrow night. Bonus candy if you're wearing the aforementioned cute bunny costume.

We had people over one year and my dogs FREAK out when people knock on the door so I decided to leave a bowl on the porch. We sat in the living room which has windows that overlook the porch. DH warned me that someone was going to take all the candy and run. I would never think of doing that so I laughed and said no way.
He was partially right. The little punks took the candy AND my bowl! Lesson learned!
I would love to hand out Halloween candy, but unfortunately I don't get to. I live in a condo and while we have external doors, we never get any trick or treaters. If I did have them, I would do 2 pieces per kid. Gotta keep it fair!

I try and buy based on what I can afford and how many trick or treaters I expect... generally I get enough so that I can give each kid 2-3 pieces.... what usually ends up happening is that i start with 3, DH sees me doing this and says I'll run out (this is while we are getting kids), I start giving 2, then suddenly the amount of trick or treaters dwindles and I'm left with a ton of candy.
SS...we haven't lived anywhere to get trick or treaters...an apt, a mobile home at the end of a ct. surrounded by the elderly, and now a rural area. But had we or should we ever have any, I'd give a handful which would equal 23 fun size kit kats, crunch, or twix bars

I think teenagers trick-or-treating is just stupid, so they only get one.
The 4 year old in a bunny outfit? A handful
Exactly this! I even have two bowls. One with the good stuff and one with cheapo crap. Young kids and anyone who puts an effort into it get the good stuff and the high schooler with the orange t-shirt gets bubble gum. I learned this from my grandmother.

How many Reese's cups do I merit as a black cat?
You'll have to knock on my door to find out. But I think I can make it worth your while.
ETA: You can have all the Reese's if this is your costume:
I make up little bags with a couple pieces of candy, a pencil, and a small toy (glow in the dark bats this year). All the cute kids definitely get one of those. If any big kids, especially ones not dressed up, come to the house, then they just get a piece or two.

Your grandmother is brilliant. I love that idea. I do give out more based on costume, age, manners, etc. Teenagers definitely get less, and the less-than-desirable candy! Sorry, but they already had their time of being little and going trick-or-treating...
I generally let the kids grab what they want, but if a kid is well-mannered and will only take one piece, I usually throw a big handul in the bag.
On the other hand, when a 16 year old with hands big enough to palm a basketball shows up without a costume and all of his buddies waiting in the car shouting "Dude get us the good stuff" then he gets one pack of smarties with a warning to "share with all your little friends!" And, I might yell at them, "OMG, Trevor, Justin? Is that y'all? I saw your granny today! Y'all don't forget to pick up her Depends for her and tell your mama I said hey. Smoochies!"
Last year I bought 5 big bags of candy and we only had two trick or treaters. Fail. Guess who's a$$ grew that month??
The exact same thing happened to me last year, except we had three trick or treaters!
We have a fluctuation problem.
Been at the house 4 years now. Year one - 30 kids. Year two - 89 kids. Year three - 20 kids. No idea what to expect this year.
DH went and bought Welsh's Gummy Snacks. I told him that was entirely unacceptable, so I am purchasing two bags of candy tomorrow (not sure what kind yet). Not to mention the fact that the bags only have 22 pieces each! That is entirely NOT enough treats to follow the cute=more treats rule!
Solution: Buy enough candy for 100 kids. Eat the leftovers.
We live in an area with a lot of kids, but since we're in an apartment building we really only get a handful of trick-or-treater's. Usually I let them pick the candy.
Last year we weren't home and I put a bowl outside of our door with candy with a little sign saying something cute. I was surprised that there was actually candy left in the bowl when we got home.

The cuter the kid, the more candy they get.
