  • We bed share.  Her time is coming to an end soon though.  She will be in a crib her own room.  She naps in her crib just fine now already.  We bed shared with all of our kids and we transitioned them all around 12-18 months.

  • it started out great...no bed sharing at all for 10 months.  then we moved into a new house and her crib went into her own room as opposed to in the same room as us.  she would wake up once and stand up and instead of me putting her back to sleep in her crib, i would grab her and take her to the bed.

fast forward 4 months and now she falls asleep at 6pm in her bed and then when MH and I are ready for bed around 9pm, we carry her into our bed.  shame on us.  MH can't sleep without DD in our bed anymore.  good thing we have a king.  Sad

  • I'm sorry if my post came off crappy! I didn't mean to be a jerk.
  • Nope. She was a noisy sleeper and was only in a pack'n'play in our room from the time we came home from the hospital until 5 weeks old....then she got booted from the room. Then it was the living room from week 5 to 8 and then her own room. She thinks being in our bed is playtime and won't sleep....she goes crazy.

  • If DH didn't put his foot down, I would still be bed sharing with LO.  I love having him close to me when I sleep, but DH & LO both sleep better when DH & I sleep in our bed & LO sleeps in his crib.

  • we bed share. my DS refuses the crib. He does have his own Montessori Floor Bed in his room that he naps on and sleeps in for the first part of the night until we go to bed and bring him with us. We wont transition until the molar teething hell is over and we all feel ready. I love snuggling with him
  • DH sometimes does to get him to fall asleep for naps. His crib is also in our room. Every time we seem to make progress he gets sick and it sets us back because he wants to be held to fall asleep or something. Right now is horrible because he doesnt want to lay in his crib and he doesn't want held. I have to alternate between the two until he's too tired to fight it. He either has a stomach bug or the dairy we've introduced is giving him a bad reax.

  • My DD starts off the night sleeping in her own crib in her own room but when she wakes up in the middle of the night every night she refuses to go back down. She just wants to comfort nurse the rest of the night so for the rest of the night she sleeps with me on the guest bed. Works for us for now but I do hope we can get her to STTN sometime in the not so distant future.

  • DD has several times been brought back to the bed with us.  However, she tries to crawl off the bed constantly.  If it weren't for this, I'd have her in my bed.  I loved cuddling with her.  Do none of your babies crawl off?  Even the end of the bed?  DH is a heavy sleeper so he doesn't feel her movement.  But I've been in the bed once when it happened but she was asleep and rolled off.  So there wasn't enough movement until the fall to wake me up.

  • Alastair has been in his crib ever since he was three months old. His bed, his room. Now his big boy room. Never had a problem. Loved it,because he was such a noisy sleeper and I just couldn't sleep with him in my room, much less bed.

Aidan, however is another matter. He has not slept on his own once. We bed shared for a while, and now DH and I take shifts on the couch with him so the other one can sleep for a bit. Since he does not sleep well due to the reflux/ colic/ whatever the hell it is, it's the best solution for us, and we both get some sleep every night - we change shifts when I pump.

The last few nights, he actually slept. Much less screaming, much less fussing. Maybe we are on the mend and can slowly move upstairs, then in his receiving crib and after that in his own room. The goal is about three months, but I think it may be closer to four. We'll see.

Have you tried a rock n play? DD had horrible reflux and she slept amazingly in the rock n play until she was 6 months old and started to sit up in it. I started her in our room and then by 4 months I moved it into her room for a couple of months before transitioning to her crib. I didn't use the rock n play with DS and he didn't sttn until he was a year old. Dd sttn in her rock n play from 8 weeks old. That thing is amazing, IMO.

fun fact: the rock and play isn't sold in Canada.

That's a shame. I'm only half sane because of it! Is Nita in Canada? I can't keep up with locations....

    she is!

I remember looking it up when we all had newborns and so many of you swore by it.

When my DD started to crawl on the bed I moved the mattress onto the floor in the guest bedroom and started sleeping in there with her instead of bringing her into our bed.

  • Thanks for asking this. Nice to see what others doing, though, my next question would be to those that transitioned to crib...how?? I remember when DH said it was time for DD to go into her own room and I dreaded it. Now that she's too mobile and would wake after an hour of sleep, I was like "bring on the crib".

You would have to have a US person snuggle it in. My mom's friends walked a walker for their grand kid which I guess they are banned and you cannot get them in store in Canada....or maybe just the area of Canada they are in. Anyway, my mom wrapped it up like a gift and then wrapped in brown shipping paper and addressed it. Since it was a wrapped gift they had the drug dogs sniff it but they didn't unwrap it. And their friends now had a walker. Haha

I'm curious about the logistics of bed-sharing at this age. T goes to bed at 7:30. Do your kids have late bedtimes or do you go to bed with them early? Do they start off sleeping on their own and then move into bed with you when you are ready for bed?

I have the same questions! Plus, how do you make sure your LO's don't walk right off the bed! DD would never stay on it!

We've tried the early bedtime but she ends up waking exactly 90 minutes later. Perhaps part of the issue is having her sleep in the same bed. I don't know. Do your LO's stay asleep all night? So what works best for us is that I nurse her to sleep when I see the sleep signs, which can range from 8:30 to 11 pm. I usually lay in bed with her and catch up on my DVR or read TB. Sometimes I put the video monitor on her and join DH. She sleeps in between the two of us so she just wiggles in between. Luckily, we haven't had her walk off the bed cuz we're very aware of her movements...again, this could be a bad thing meaning we don't rest enough.

Yeah, I am. It's one of those things I hate about being here....I want to be able to buy things if I want it. Together with the crappy amazon, I am sometimes slightly annoyed. Ok. More than slightly.

Another fun fact, not sleep related: I just had to order my double jogging stroller to one of DH's business associates home. For some reason it is not sold here. Like at all. Nobody could explain it, since I remember seeing them on clear out sales. But...no longer, and you cannot import them either. So they must be banned for some insane reason.

Thankfully, the guy is a sweetheart and will bring it over. I hatemy sit n stand. It is Hugh and while greatina mall, my one and only attempt to walk Shadow with both minis failed miserably at a hill. Ok, I was two weeks post c/s,but still.

I hate hate hate it when I want something and I canno have it because someone drunk on maple juice thinks I cannot.

Joolz, any clue why we cannot get the rnp? Just out of curiosity?

I'd smuggle it across the border.  :)
  • There have been several nights that I tried to get DD to sleep with us in desperation because I couldn't take being up any longer... but she thinks it is play time.  She will not lay down or sleep in our bed.

She was in the co-sleeper or rock n play in our room until 6 months old.  Then we moved her to her crib in her own room.

  • We bedshare on occasional. Expecially is DS is sick. If he is not sick we generally have a rule that he can't come into our bed until 5am (although we don't always keep it).

He will sleep in our bed, but we don't get much sleep. This kid doesn't move at all in his crib but when he is in our bed he flings himself around so half the time he ends up with his head at our knees and his legs kicking me in the stomach. Or he decides to play with our hair all night or just lays there clapping and babbling forever. He is such a weirdo.

  • I'm pretty sure the rock and play (like walkers) are banned here for safety reasons. Similar to the difference in safety rules with car seats between Canada and the US (I have no idea what the difference is, I just know you can't bring a carseat up here from the States).

And most US stores won't mail to Canada. In fact, most won't let us use a Canadian credit card.

for us, bedtime is anywhere between 8:30 & 11:00, but usually about 9. he nurses in bed then falls asleep. after a full day w/DS, 8:30 is none too early for me!

  • I wish I wasn't bed sharing. DD has been in her own bed since 4 months, but lately with her molars coming in she has been waking up and will only go back to sleep with one of us. We were bringing her in our bed, but then no one sleeps, so we take turns laying on a futon mattress in the living room. Hopefully this won't last too long. Everyone seems to sleep better in their own beds.
