s/o genetically manipulated food

I know a lot of you expressed that you aren't concerned about this topic but I wanted to just share this ancedotal piece of information.

The produce here in Tajikistan is all local. There are no pesticides, no chemical fertilizers and no gentically manipulated species of fruits and vegtables. The people here just plain can't afford it. And you know what?

The produce tastes freaking AMAZING. Seriously. I have NEVER had peaches so delicious, seen tomatoes so vibrantly red, etc. etc. The produce just tastes alive in a way that U.S. produce just doesn't.

While I have been concerned about genetically manipulated food stuffs for a long time - this experience has only served to make me more aware of how we are messing with our food. And I cannot believe that this is without consequence in the long term.

My family is a Foreign Service family. Families like mine are posted in every corner of the globe. We live our lives away from family, friends and the conviences and comforts of home. We often live and work in dangerous places among those that misunderstand our intentions and purposes. Sometimes members of our ranks sacrifice our lives to further diplomacy.  Please remember that we serve too. And I'm always open to questions.

Re: s/o genetically manipulated food

  • Yep. We always grow a garden, but it was so hot this summer and we were in a drought area, so at one point I had to buy some tomatoes b/c ours were not coming on. I fed them to our pigs, because we sliced one up and it was disgusting. It had no taste. Something is very wrong with that.

  • For me my lack of concern isn't that I don't prefer that we eat foods that are more natural, it's more that these are things I just can't stress about. We only have so much money, and so we do what we can. We grow what we can, we buy what we can from farmers markets, we make our food rather than eating processed foods, and for me that's good enough. One day I'd love to buy our meat from local farmers too, but for now that's too expensive. Even when that time comes, my children will probably eat the occasional cheerio. I just don't think that's the end of the world.

This is exactly how I feel. I like to joke that healthy food is only for the rich and it's kind of true...at least in the US.

Yes (except I don't grow my own food. It's not for a lack of trying though... my thumb is the darkest shade of black... there's no green to be found.)

  • DH and I watched a documentary last weekend called Food Inc. its on Netflix.  It was really good.  I never realized how much we eat is just not right whether is genetically altered or how its processed.  It showed videos of how they process beef, chicken, and pork and it was disgusting.  DH and I both grew up around more natural foods since my grandparents were farmers and his parents were as well.  We are going to start going to the farmers market for our produce to get organic and then we are hoping my inlaws will sell us a cow to take to their butcher.  I know it may seem like I've jumped on a bandwagon, but I am really grossed out.  If better is available then why not try to get it?

  • We buy as much food as we can fresh and organic, but I can't complain about the occasional cheerio. We are in California, though, so our produce is usually pretty good (except supermarkets...). I usually buy food at Trader Joe's or farmer's markets.
