Parenting after a Loss

question for those of you with toddlers 18 mo +

So DD just turned 18 months old. I have several friends/acquaintances on FB who have children close to this age. I KNOW I shouldn't compare my child to others, but it seems like a LOT of them are already introducing potty training & toddler beds. A girl I know who has a daughter who is only two days older than my DD, already has transitioned her to a toddler bed & posted several weeks ago on FB that her DD had "gone in the potty all weekend". I'm shocked by this. We bought DD a potty, but she has absolutely NO idea what to use it for. She sits on it while we are in the bathroom & thinks its funny & she knows it is called "the potty", but shes never used it for its intended purpose. Also, she is very comfortable in her crib & doesn't try to climb out. I really don't even want to think about transitioning her to a toddler bed yet. She is so busy & and I KNOW she won't stay in it to fall asleep. She just doesn't seem ready for any of this "big kid" stuff. Soooo......my question is, is my kid "behind"? Just wondering where some of you with kids this age are at? Sorry for the long rant. TIA!

  • Zane is almost 25 months and he is still not ready for PTing.  I think there's a movement lately for parents to potty train their kids at a younger age.  But my line of thinking is to do it when you think your kid is ready.

As for the crib - keep her in there as long as possible!  Zane is in a twin sized bed, but that's because he co-slept with me and instead of trying to transition him to the crib, we just went with a big boy bed.  Besides, we'll need the crib for Harper.  Again, that's another do it when you're ready issue.

  • M is still in his crib. I don't think he would stay in a toddler bed yet. & he doesn't try to climb out...

He tells us while he is pooping, or shortly after he has pooped, but that's as far as we are with training. He doesn't mention pee at all, so I don't think he is ready yet.

I think you are doing just fine momma.

  • I don't think you're behind at all! DS is 18 months and will be in his crib as long as possible (I'm thinking kindergarten myself). I'm prepared to take the platform off if needed (leaving the mattress on teh floor inside the crib) if he starts climbing out.

We just started introducing the potty but I don't plan to really start potty training until next year.

  • Not at all! Some people are just quick to get their kids out of the crib and PTed. DD1 is now 3 and we didn't move her to a toddler bed until she was about 30 months and didn't even attempt to PT until this past summer at around 33ish and she still has accidents. I wouldn't stress about it. do what works for you and your LO.

  • DS is 3+.  We finally potty trained him the week DD was born at 2y9m.  He still has lots of accidents.  He transitioned to a Big Boy bed at 2 years - the only reason we did it then is because he started having nightmares in his crib but would sleep on the floor fine.  I have a friend whose 3 yr old still sleeps in the crib.

  • DD is almost 14m so a little younger, but I can't imagine her being ready for PT by 18m.  I was thinking at about 2 we would push it a little.  She has had a potty since she was about 11m and she loves to climb in and out of it and has peed in it twice, but I'm pretty sure it was a complete coincidence.  As for being done with the crib, we will when she's 22m because that is when LO #2 is due and I don't want to buy another crib.

  • I wouldn't try to worry about comparing your LO with your friend's daughter. DS will be 2 next week and we have him in his crib. He's content in there -- has never tried to climb out and sleeps through the whole night.  We are only transitioning him to a big boy bed within the next few months because I am due with #2 in January and need to use the crib for the baby - eventually.

We haven't attempted PTing either. He tells us that he has pooped about 95% of the time, so he's aware of what he's doing. And he just recently started telling us dirty or poopy when we think he's peeing.  He loves to be in the bathroom with us and points to the toilet while saying "pee" or "poop". He also knows we flush his poop down the toilet after a diaper change to get him used to the idea that that is where it should go.

We'll try PTing a few months after the baby is here. I think it would just cause a lot of trouble and make us lose our patience if we pushed now. When he's ready, he'll let us know.

  • B is 22 months. I have no plans to change her to a real bed until, well....can she still be in the crib at 13? lol. The idea of a free-roaming toddler scares the crud out of me.

We are pting. We just started this month because they started at daycare and asked us to follow through. She's doing great, so we are going to go full on undies on our long weekend next weekend and see how she does.

  • Isaac likes to sit on his potty and read books - fully clothed.  He doesn't have a clue and isnt' ready.  We aren't changing him into a big boy bed until we need the crib for one of the twins.  You are NOT behind; I figured I didn't want to set myself up for failure or add undue pressure to force him to grow up too soon so we aren't touching any of that stuff until it's necessary!

Some of the kids his age (maybe 20%) are fiddling around with the idea of PT'ing - in my circle, that is - but no one has really been successful.  He wakes up flooded with pee so I know he's not ready and can't hold it physically!

  • We kept DD in her crib until she could climb out at 27m.

She is now 31m and we are just starting to really think about potty training. At her 2y appt, our pediatrician warned us that we would start hearing "Isn't she potty trained yet?" from absolutely everyone, and he recommended paying no attention to them. He said he sees plenty of kids whose parents pushed them to PT too early, and they end up with chronic constipation and other issues. We're definitely on the later side of PTing, but I'd rather wait until DD is physically ready and at least somewhat adjusted to her new baby brother.

So, in short, I wouldn't worry about being behind!
