Nighttime coughing

DD is getting over a cold, but the last 34 nights she is coughing fairly often every couple of hours at night and only at night. She hasn't had a fever, just runny nose and congested. She has also been waking up in the am and after naps with very chapped lips, which makes me think she's dehydrated? She's been drinking about her norm and eating slightly less. She's also cutting two top teeth they'll be her 5 6th. Would you be concerned about the cough? Her cold has definitely improved since Monday, the cough is the only symptom left and it's really only at night! What do you ladies think, just drainage or something to be concerned with? TIA

Re: Nighttime coughing

  • Is it a tight cough or a loose cough? If it's a tight cough, then it is likely related to drool from teething or a post-nasal drip from the cold. If it's a loose cough, then the cold may have moved to your daughter's chest.

My DD is getting over a cold and had a tight cough for a bit and now has a loose cough. I called her pedi about it and they said not to worry unless she starts running a fever or I start hearing her wheezing when she breathes.

That being said, I'm not a doctor or a nurse and maybe you should give your pedi a call just to be sure.

  • If she doesn't seem congested then it could just be the drool from teething. DD has the same.

  • We have the same thing. It's just related to getting over a cold.
