I know a lot of you expressed that you aren't concerned about this topic but I wanted to just share this ancedotal piece of information.
The produce here in Tajikistan is all local. There are no pesticides, no chemical fertilizers and no gentically manipulated species of fruits and vegtables. The people here just plain can't afford it. And you know what?
The produce tastes freaking AMAZING. Seriously. I have NEVER had peaches so delicious, seen tomatoes so vibrantly red, etc. etc. The produce just tastes alive in a way that U.S. produce just doesn't.
While I have been concerned about genetically manipulated food stuffs for a long time - this experience has only served to make me more aware of how we are messing with our food. And I cannot believe that this is without consequence in the long term.
My family is a Foreign Service family. Families like mine are posted in every corner of the globe. We live our lives away from family, friends and the conviences and comforts of home. We often live and work in dangerous places among those that misunderstand our intentions and purposes. Sometimes members of our ranks sacrifice our lives to further diplomacy. Please remember that we serve too. And I'm always open to questions.

This is exactly how I feel. I like to joke that healthy food is only for the rich and it's kind of true...at least in the US.
