**Tuesday Breastfeeding Check In**
How are things this week ladies?
I think we may finally be close to turning a corner on BFing. She is now nursing 10-15 minutes per boob (normally still taking both), which is a big improvement over 20-25. My one nipple is healed and the other is nearly healed. She still cluster feeds at least once a day, but I think I am getting better at taking advantage of nap time so I don't go insane.
I would like to get to a point where I could get in 1-2 regular pump sessions a day to build a freezer stash (I get sooo jealous when people post here about pumping huge quantities), but I am trying to focus on the positive that at least I am producing enough to fill her up each day.
Here is an interesting link I found the other day that made me feel better about how I'm doing.
Re: **Tuesday Breastfeeding Check In**
Finally started pumping, that was nice. I had to get a large patch of skin and tissue removed under my left breast yesterday, so trying to pump more on that one to give it a break since Z is a maniac with his hands while feeding and even the breast itself is very tender.
Excited to be able to get a break from night feeding on the weekends.
Nursed In public successfully twice this week.
Starry - that's great to hear that you've turned a corner. I can't wait for that. Don't feel bad about not pumping for your stash yet. You'll get there. Thanks for sharing the CDC link. Very interesting.
MissC&C - NIP wow! You are brave. We went to BRU Sunday to pick up a couple things & I was proud that I used the mother's room. Hope I get up the courage someday to NIP!
AFM, We are doing ok. He's through the 3 week growth spurt, but is still really really gassy and fussy at night. I'm starting to think it's a sensitivity or allergy. DS1 had milk, egg, chicken and walnut allergies. So, I'm going to eliminate dairy and eggs from my diet for 2 weeks to see if it helps. Last night my family had grilled cheese and tomato soup for supper & I had to have PB&J. Then DH had a big o'l bowl of ice cream for a snack while I was feeding LO. I was so jealous. Otherwise, my nips are still doing well. I think our latch is still good after introducing a paci a week and a half ago and a bottle on Friday. FX that it stays that way.
Keep up the awesome work ladies!!
DD#2 feeds pretty much every 2 hours. I do one boob per feeding. For the most part shes feeds for about 20 min per feeding. At night we go 3 to 4 hour stretches between feedings.
I am going to start pumping today or tomorrow b/ next week I will be returning to night school two nights a week. I am thinking every time she is done feeding I will pump the opposite boob.
BFing has been going pretty well for us from the beginning. DS has always latched great and stayed relatively awake throughout the whole feeding session. He has gained over 2lbs since birth!
However, we have run into a problem the past couple of days. He will feed great for about 10-15 minutes, but then starts crying and screaming. Burping him doesn't seem to help. At first, I thought that maybe he was still hungry and I wasn't making enough milk for him (although his 2lb weight gain would go against this). When I reoffer my nipple, he'll suck for a couple of seconds and then start screaming again. Last night, I tried a bottle of formula to test the theory that he might still be hungry, but he didn't want it. He spits up very little, so reflux seems unlikely. When he gets like this, he is very difficult to console. Last night, I was able to get him to calm down finally after about 45 minutes. He fed again for about 5-10minutes and then passed out. Any idea what could be causing this?? It seems to happen mostly in the evenings and overnight. So frustrating!
Thanks!
We started DD on Zantac for her reflux last week, so while I'm still on a modified diet (no caffeine, limited acidic foods, no spicy foods, limited dairy), she's nursing and sleeping better - we're up to about 15-20 minutes total per feeding instead of 8-10 before - and she's starting to stretch out the time between feedings from every 2 hours to every 2.5-3 hours, which is making it much easier to get out and do things with both kids. I really need to start pumping, and should probably introduce a bottle soon - I don't want to wait too long & then have her refuse the bottle completely. It's just hard to find time to pump when I also have a toddler to chase after.
CLLDLL - don't worry, you'll be able to NIP eventually! All it takes is finding yourself in a place without a mother's room, no bottle, and a hungry baby. Or at least, that's what it took for me to NIP for the first time with DS. I still prefer to use a mothers room (or dressing room in a department store, or someplace more private) but I have no issues feeding the baby anywhere/anytime that she needs to be fed.
I think baby H is in the midst of his 3 week growth spurt. He hasn't been sleeping well at all the past few days and nights. Last night was an exception but I made him nurse really well before bed. Then he had a fit each time we were done.
I'm thinking of seeing an LC or going to LLL because 3 1/2 weeks out and we are still using a nipple shield and I don't feel like he is eating very effectively or efficiently. He'll suck for a minute then take a break for awhile. So I started nursing him skin to skin and using a wet washcloth to wake him up. This seems to help.
I started pumping 2 days ago and get a fair amount out. 2 to 3 ounces. But I'm not in love with it. However with returning to work in 7ish weeks I need to start building a supply. And I'd really like for someone else to be able to feed him on occasion.
I sort of hate it and want to quit. DD and I had a fairly easy time after the initial two weeks and the soreness went away. We are using a nipple shield and it still hurts.
It makes me cry a lot.
DS is 8 days old.
I've been slowly working on a freezer stash but we went out of town this weekend so I didn't pump as frequently as normal and I'm not producing the extra now...so trying to get that back up.
Overall, I'm pretty happy with breastfeeding now that the latch is better!
Overall its going well...shes feeding well and I've started a freezer stash for when I go back to work soon. I can't believe its been almost 2 weeks already! But yesterday she started having trouble latching; she's sticking her tongue in the way and we are back to taking like 5 minutes to get her attached. I don't know what is making her do this suddenly, but I'm letting her suck on my finger to get her sucking on something and train her to get her tongue out of the way. I haven't given into a pacifier or bottle yet, and now I'm glad I haven't b/c I would probably think her latching problem was from that. So now I have to wait for her to figure out her latch again and be good at it before I do the bottle/paci thing. On top of nursing her I'm able to pump about 5-6 oz total in a day...don't know if this is good or not but I guess it's better than nothing!
I pumped yesterday for the first time and got 6 oz out of one boob! He was doing his weird thing where he'll take one side, sleep for 15 minutes then take the other. So it had been a while since he had the one that was more full. I froze half of it and saved nearly 2 ounces for my husband to feed at midnight so I could try to sleep a bit more. Apparently he didn't like the bottle too much and was still hungry after it, so I nursed him anyway. Guess he needs a lot more than 2 ounces!
Things are going well. She's still eating pretty frequently. I consider a 2 - 2.5 hour stretch of sleep at night a success. My nipples are hurting more this week. The right side especially kills every time she latches. I'm still not pumping because my back still hurts and I'm still using the nipple shields. I haven't really been trying to get her off of the nipple shields. She gained a full lb between her first two doctor appointments (ten days) so I'm not concerned about her not getting enough milk.
Tuesday is the lactation support group at the hospital - not sure if I can motivate myself to go.
Things this week are going well, all things considered. C is doing pretty good with latching, about 80% of the time she latches easily. The other 20% she struggles, or latches and lets go, rinse, repeat. It's frustrating, but I won't give up.
We are still giving a pumped bottle of BM in the morning when I am super engorged so I can pump. I am trying to work in an evening pump so I can build up a stash for when I go back to work in December, but it's hard because I loathe the pump.
On another note, we had friends over last night and I was too chicken to nurse in front of them, so I hid in the room twice to nurse! Made me feel like I was missing out (not to mention the pizza arrived when I was nursing!) Maybe next time..
