NB size for 37 weeker? STM

I will be induced at 37w b/c of my mild pre-e and preventing it from worsening. She is measuring 4.5lbs as of yesterday and I know that she is ahead and I still have 5+ weeks to go, but do you think she will need NB size? I have a few outfits and onesies in NB size but just wanted to know if anyone had a LO at 37w and what size they were in.

  • There is no way to tell... Probably NB will fit.  Nothing larger but she may be in premie...

  • Have you checked the suggested weight of NB sized clothing? I believe they go up to 9 lbs as far as Carter's clothes go. I would think your baby is no where near 9 lbs at 37 weeks, but I could be wrong.

  • Unless you have big babies, like I do, you'll probably need some premie sizes.  I know several people who had full term babies that needed premie clothes.

  • I believe NB size typically fits up to 8lbs. There is no 100% accurate way to predict birth weight, but your Dr will probably have some idea of LO's approximate weight. Most babies will fit NB for at least the first couple weeks.

  • My DS was 6lbs, 1oz at 36+4.  Had a growth US at 30 weeks saying he was 4lbs, 1oz so right on target with your us.  He fit in NB for 3-4 weeks.

  • DS was 6lbs 14oz at 40w6d, and 2 weeks prior he was estimated via u/s to be just shy of 8lbs......  So I wouldn't base clothing purchases on an u/s estimate.  I would have a couple preemies, some NB, and a few 0-3 month items.  You truly never know how big baby is going to be until they are here.

  • My first 2 children were born at exactly 37 weeks (not twins & not induced) they were 5lbs 9oz & 5 lbs 11oz.  They wore newborn cloths for at least 2 months.  At birth they would have fit the premie cloths better (remember babies loose a few ounces after birth) but I thought that was a waste of money and they just had big newborn cloths the first few weeks.  I couldn't imagine putting them in 0-3 months clothing at that time.
  • My son was born at just over 38 weeks and never wore NB clothes -- he was in 0-3 months from the start.  I'd have a few NB sleepers, etc, on hand and wait to see what you get.  37 weeks IS full term, but as you know, babies can vary a lot regardless of when they're born!

  • My DS was born at exactly 37 weeks and he was a whopping 8 lbs. He still fit in a few NB outfits but not for long!

  • My twins were born at 36 weeks and were 6.1 and 6.7. They were too long to wear preemie clothing, and wore NB for 6 weeks. I found that the Carter's sleepers shrunk when washed for the first time which is why I think the two preemie outfits I got were too small. At 32 weeks I think they were both estimated at a little over 4 pounds.

I would plan for NB for a bit, but you never know!

  • You never know - but I did find that Carters NB size ran bigger than Gerber NB size.  Both of mine fit in the Gerber sleepers for only about 2-3 weeks, but fit in Carters for a lot longer.  So it also depends on the brand.

I would guess that your LO will probably fit in NB size though!

  • I'm in a similar position as you.  I may have to have a c-section at 37 weeks (or a couple days later), and I'm wondering how big she will be.  My oldest was 8 days early and was 7 lbs 3 oz.  My second was 6 days early and was 7 lbs 2 oz.

I already have newborn clothes ready for the hospital, but I suppose if she is tiny, I can have DH, my mom, or MIL go shopping and get a couple preemie outfits.  My girls were 19 in and 18.5 in though...preemie outfits usually only fit up to like 16-17 inches (if I remember correctly).  I'm pretty much betting on NB sizes for a few weeks.

  • Gerber  sizes run super small.

My LO was 6#13oz at 40w4d and wore NB size for like a month.

  • i found with our little one for sleeps and shirts it was more related to her length not overall weight.  she's always measured long so she always grew out of sleepers length way before the width.

that  being said we were able to be in NB stuff for longer than i thought -was also induced ~1 week early with our first.

  • Thanks for the input. I doubt she will be short so premie prob won't work. If I need them though, I will send DH shopping! Lol. I will pack my NB outfits and a couple 03 that I have. Ps her legs measure 2 weeks ahead and her body and head 1 week ahead....I guess she will have DH height 6'7".
