The link Starry posted shows such a difference in BF percentages in the south, e.g. Alabama, Louisiana etc. does anyone who lives in that region know why? Just curious if there is a lack of BFing support. Phone typos and formatting sorry .

A lot of it is population differences. Mississippi has the largest African American population in the country and the lowest breastfeeding rates (similar patterns follow for the other Southern states with low breastfeeding rates).

I don't necessarily think NIP has anything to do with BFing rates. I've lived in TX and NV (both relatively good initial nursing rates of 80%ish) and have never in my life seen NIP. In TX people ARE squeamish about NIP, but the breastfeeding rates are still relatively high in TX.

I live in Texas and I know lots of ppl that bf so maybe it depends on where you live? I live in the Austin area and and you know we're a bunch of hippies
so you see NIP in public all the time. I personally have done it with DD about 10 times already and no one has ever said anything or given me any looks so far. My mom also lives in the middle of nowhere, tx and I have seen tons of people NIP I think most ppl just don't notice it because girls wear a cover and don't just whip it out? I dunno but thats been my experience.
Also someone mentioned that WIC participants are more likely to use formula but I dont necessarily think thats true, They are BIG advocates of BF and even offer additional things for for people who do bf like increased food for mom ( and baby once they start solids) they have lactation consultants and I heard from a friend who FF and had it for a few months that they were really hard on her for choosing formula.
Who would have thought the state I live in has one of the lowest percentages! I live in Kentucky. I nursed DS1 for a full 12 months so I guess I am part of the measly 10%.(But it sure kind of makes me feel good!) I live in the largest city in KY and there are support services everywhere, its just whether or not you want to use them. However, I honestly don't think I have ever seen (or noticed!) anyone ever NIP. I know I never did the full year I BF DS1.
The more I was educated about the benefits of BF the more I wanted to do it. So I think education has alot to do with it. However, since it doesn't seem quite socially acceptable to NIP around here, I know that can shun people away as well. I always seemed to feel like a hermit and was nervous to go anywhere around feeding time b/c I didn't want to have to NIP. Crazy, I know.
While DS2 is getting breastmilk, it isn't from nursing. I am EP due to a crazy number of reasons. I know all the benefits aren't 100% there, but still very beneficial to him.

I am on WIC and they really push BFing. They have hospital grade pumps that they loan out for a 50 deposit and like PP mentioned, I get more food because I am EBFing. They have LC's on staff and I have met with them 3 times already, twice before DS2 was born, and I have another appointment today. They have monthly BF support group meetings also. So although they do offer formula, BF is encouraged first.
