Hand Foot and Mouth

So I know there are some people who have been through this with their LOs...help. Ky does not have it but I was informed today that one of the children that goes to the same sitter was diagnosed. No more fever but I guess she has the blisters now? She was not at daycare today (she was yesterday) but my sitter told me this morning the doctor told the little girl's mom she is no longer contagious? From what I read on-line this is NOT an accurate statement. When is it okay to send them back to daycare? How can I get this across to my sitter without coming across as a B? I jsut do not want Ky sick again after jsut getting over strep!

Re: Hand Foot and Mouth

  • What is your sitter's written policy in regards to illness?  Does it state that a doctor's note is needed for a child with a contagious illness to return to care?  I don't know that you can avoid coming off like a B, particularly if there isn't written guidelines.  But if it were me I would still express my concern and maybe call your own pedi about it.  If it is your pedi's word vs. the other child's pedi then I think ultimately the sitter makes the call.

Unfortunately a doctor's note is not required. And I guess with HF&M I am still unclear on exactly when they are contagious and when they are able to return to care. Apparently most of the virus is shed in the time they have the fever but it can still be spread for quite some time after. So I do not know if it is just advised to keep them home at the beginning or until after the blisters or gone or some other time frame.

  • Perhaps your doctor can give you some reassurance. The only experience with HF&M that I have, is when my bride's maid came down with it at my wedding.  lovely :-p

  • My friend's daycare's standard is "no oozing pus" but they can still have blisters.  Realistically, they are most contagious during the first week, but are still a little contagious until it has completely cleared up. https://www.cdc.gov/hand-foot-mouth/about/transmission.html

I'd ask the daycare to be extra cautious about cleaning surfaces and hand hygiene to try and prevent it from spreading.

Thanks! And the CDC website is where I was reading about it lol. When I talked to the sitter this morning she had just sanitized everything with bleach over the weekend and I know she does the lysol stuff like daily. She used to work in a daycare before she had her second child and decided to stay home and do in home care so I trust she knows the hygeine basics.

Maybe I will jsut send my kid in a bubble suit Stick out tongue

  • We had a really wierd experience with it, that may or may not be helpful to share. There was a lLO in Layne's class that had it. Layne got a fever shortly after, but never developed symptoms. My DW, however got a full break out and was out of work for weeks. So, all of that to say, sometimes you can be super careful and unexpected things happen. Like some kids may never get it even if directly exposed, but their moms can catch it through them somehow. Good luck deciding.
