toddler moms: snacks

i still feed truitt a late morning snack and an afternoon snack. some days he doesn't seem to want snacks, but it's our routine and i continue to give them to him. he eats them (and is super skinny). it just kind of occured to me that i am not sure when kids cut out these snack times, if at all... any insight?

Re: toddler moms: snacks

  • I think what you're doing is standard toddler protocol.

At school Lucas eats several times a day. There is breakfast, mid-morning snack, lunch, mid-afternoon snack, and (I think) a late afternoon snack (around 4:00 p.m.).

There are optional snacks at the door for the ride home which he must eat (and you know it is only 20 minutes to get everyone home).

For further assurance, one of my toddler books warns against being overly focused on the child accomplishing most eating at the three main meals. Instead, the book says, realize that they are grazing animals at this stage and that there should be more, smaller meals.

(And, this goes on about setting these expectations and giving more, smaller meals to avoid the pressure and tension at the three main meals, etc, etc.) -- So, I guess that's another vote for snackage.

  • Eloise's school does snacks at 9am and 2pm (just after nap), and as those are the times I pick her up and drop her off, I see the older toddlers are having snacks then too.

I know my friend's preschool offer morning snacks to 3 and 4yo kids (which parents have to bring for the class and she gripes about).

The afternoon snack becomes the after school snack which lasts until... sometime in college maybe?? Actually, judging by the traffic at my office's vending machine, the afternoon snack might never end.

  • Sweetness' school gives snacks around 9 and 2, but when I pick her up at 3:30, she's hungry again.  My other niece and nephew are both older and still have an after school snack when they get home because they're starving.

  • Owen is definitely eating less at his snacks and more at his meals than he used to.  He still eats snacks, though, and "they" always say it's really healthiest for all of us to eat several small meals like toddlers do.

He used to eat so much at his morning snack that I called it second breakfast (like a Hobbit) and made sure it was hearty in case he didn't want much at lunch then. :)

  • thanks! i kind of forgot about afternoon snacks for older kids. when i was thinking about this, i reasoned that older kids don't have snack time at school in the afrnoon. but i simply forgot about the snacks we would eat when we got home... thanks, mamas. (we can get weirded out but the strangest things, can't we?)

    ?

We always saying Orion has first and second breakfast and first and second dinner. ?He has some trouble having the attention span to finish a meal in one sitting, especially if DH and I aren't eating with him.

?Orion still has a morning and afternoon snack, though not as much in the afternoon as he used to. ?His morning snack really is like a second breakfast. ?He'll have milk and a bowl of oatmeal at home and then another full breakfast at daycare. ?He usually just has crackers or cheese in the afternoon. ??
