June 2013 Moms

ur first ultrasound? How soon did you hear the heart beat.

I am soooo bummed. I just callled my doc's office to see what I could expect at my first appt. I'm getting a bunch of stupid labs. No unltra sound. No doppler. Nothing. I'm already a ball of nerves and this isn't helping. Believing I was gonna see my baby next week was keeping me sane, now I'm just depressed. I'm not even looking forward to my appointment.

When did you ladies get your 1st ultrasound? When did you hear the heartbeat. I need some encouragement folks. I  didn't realize this stuff takes so freaking long!

Re: ur first ultrasound? How soon did you hear the heart beat.

  • I will have my first appointment and ultrasound on Monday and I'll be 6 weeks 4 days.  Can you request an ultrasound?  You are far enough that you should be able to see the heartbeat, etc.

  • I had one at my first apt 5wks and we didn't see anything....not even a sac. We go Thurs at 8weeks for u/s. Most OB do dating u/s between 6-8 weeks but some OB don't do one at all. I would call and see when your OB typically does u/s.  GL!

  • I don't think they even try with a doppler until at least 10wks. I know with ultrasounds they have a way to sort of hear the heartbeat but i think it's different, not sure if anyone can back me up on that (2nd time moms?). Typically you don't get an ultrasound til around 8weeks (though some practices don't do them that early). It really depends on where you go.

  • I did IVF so I get early ultrasounds.  We couldn't hear the heartbeat at 6 weeks and I was a little disapointed but we heard it yesterday at 7 weeks.  That being said, early ultrasounds freak me out.  Gizmo is measuring a few days behind and that just makes me worry since we know our exact dates.  Hang in there and just try to be positive until they can get you in.
  • You can see the HB between 5-6 weeks and hear it on the doppler at 10w, which is early. Not everywhere does an early u/s (which baffles me, how are they dated?) so you may have to wait until the doppler can be used :/

  • I'm not having my first ultrasound until December 4th (I believe that I will be around 12 weeks). I'm using the Spanish national health system, so I suppose that is normal. But I was really hoping it would be earlier.
  • With DS1, I heard the hb via Doppler at 12 weeks and had an ultrasound at 12 and 20 weeks.

With this LO, I asked for an elective ultrasound at 8 weeks. I couldn't wait until 12 weeks. I'm not sure if insurance will cover it, but I didn't care.

  • I think every medical facility/insurance is different. I know some people who have had u/s between 6-9 weeks. Some ladies won't have an u/s until week 20 when they find out the gender!

I had my first one at 4w6d (we weren't sure how far along we were due to AF being irregular) and all we saw was an empty sac. We went in 9 days later, making me 6w2d and we saw our LO and heard the heartbeat. I went in 2 weeks later because of some bleeding at 8w3d and they did an u/s just to make sure baby was okay.

I think it all depends on the circumstances. Perhaps you can just call and request one...they probably wouldn't mind -- especially if not having one is causing you to stress (which isn't good for the baby).

  • Are you sure that you even see a Dr. at your first appointment. I have this wil be my 3rd ob office between my 3 pregnencies and with all of them my first appointment is just with a nurse practioner going over family history.  I dont go in untill 8 weeks for just that.  Maby thats the case? If I were you I would call to see who you will see at that appointment and ask if you will get an ultrasound this early.

  • I had my first appt on Friday and it was just bloodwork with a nurse practioner.  I don't even get to see the OB until Dec. 12 when I will be 12 weeks.  It's a little nerve wracking but it'll be fine.

  • I'm in the same boat. Apparently my first appt. is just paperwork, a urine sample, and a pap. BOOORING. I was disappointed too. I guess I'll be waiting til 12 weeks for an U/S.

  • I had my first appt at 6w,1d. Just labs and a basic exam. First u/s done at 7w,1d because they needed to date me and I'm high-risk. Second u/s at 7w,6d with my high-risk OB. They did doppler at my first u/s so I got to hear heartbeat. Saw the heartbeat on the second u/s and they told me he/she was 157 bpm. FINALLY having what my OB calls the "New OB" appointment tomorrow at 9w,1d. That's the full work up, third u/s, discussing birth plan, etc.

Be patient it does take a while. I've been in so much only because I'm high-risk. I got my BFP on 9/28! Got blood work done on 10/1 at my primary care doctor's office to confirm hCG levels. Had to wait until 10/10 for first OB appt where they only really did blood work and sent me on my way. First u/s was on 10/17. Second u/s on 10/22 with high-risk doctor. Just over a month later I'm finally getting my main appointment! Hang in there!

  • The practice I go to schedules your first appt/ pregnancy confirmation u/s between 8-10 weeks. They said its because they do not like doing it earlier than that in case you are not as far along and can't see the heartbeat yet, (which becomes even more nerve wracking!).

I had complications in the beginning of this pregnancy, so I went in at 2w2d after my BFP, but a heartbeat wasn't found until my next appt at 3w2d after my BFP.

  • My first appt was at 7weeks 6 days and she did a dating us where I saw but didn't hear the HB. DH and I heard the HB on Sunday and 8 weeks 4 days using my home Doppler! Best sound ever! I recorded it on my phone and listen to it often! :)

Waiting is so hard but just try to stay busy with other things. It also doesn't hurt to ask for an US?

  • I had my confirmation at 4w and ultrasound at about 7w. I already had an appt with my doc for the 4w day though, we just added the pg test to it. It's not my first rodeo, so she knows my history and we didn't have to go over that.

I've still not HEARD the hb, but I've seen it. It can't be heard on Doppler for weeks yet, what people hear at appts now is a computer interpretation of the heartrate. The hearts are just too tiny now for machines to pick up the sound.

  • I thought my 1st real appt would include an u/s as well. DH even took the day off of work to go with me. Well, all they did was a pelvic exam & review my blood work. Like you, I was pretty bummed & stressed.

I ended up getting my 1st u/s at 9wks. Afterward, I was actually pretty happy they waited! Our baby looked like a little gummy bear, with arm & leg nubs. There was no risk of seeing an empty sac because I was far enough along (because that would have stressed me out even more, although I know it's common that early on).

Now I'm just waiting for a doppler so I can hear the heart beat!!

Hang in there & do your best to stay patient. As PP suggested, just assume everything is okay & take it day by day. That's what I did & those couple weeks flew by! GL!

  • With my oldest, who is 10.5, I had one ultrasound my whole pregnancy! That was the big check they do around 1620 weeks.

My second pregnancy, I only had one at 11 weeks due to spotting. It ended in a partial Molar pregnancy. Loss at 11 weeks.

My third pregnancy, because of my history, I had an ultrasound at 6/7 weeks to confirm. The normal one at 1620 weeks. Then I also had one at 32 weeks because I had placenta previa that ended up correcting itself and also fibroids that had to be monitored.

My current pregnancy, I just had one yesterday at 7 weeks 5 days to confirm. It was not scheduled when I made the appt, but doc squeezed us in that day because of my history with the Molar pregnancy. My symptoms were very similar to the Molar so doc made sure it was done that day. So far all looking good! I do have fibroids again, so hopefully I will get more ultrasounds to monitor!
  • I have my first appointment Thursday at 9w2d. They said I will be getting an u/s, blood work & pelvic exam. They wouldn't see me before 8 weeks though.

  • I had my first u/s last week bc I was unsure of how far along I was (I still BF DD so my cycle is wonky) and I had also had bleeding so I wanted to see if I still had a viable pregnancy. With my first though, my u/s wasn't until 12 weeks.

  • I have one next Wednesday at 7 weeks.  It's only because I am already high risk with diabetes, so they have to monitor me fairly closely.

With DS, I wouldn't have had an U/S until 20 weeks, but I had some bleeding, so they went ahead and sent me in at 8 weeks 3 days.

  • With DD I had my first appointment at 6 weeks and my first ultrasound at 8 weeks.  I have my first appointment tomorrow at 7 weeks and am hoping they will schedule an ultrasound for next week or the week after.  We don't have an ultrasound machine at my branch so I have to go to another office.
