Intro and looking for TTC guidance...

Hello,

I've been a lurker on the bump since going off BC in January.  I've learned so much on these boards!

I am 40 years old and have 2 kids.  About a year ago, DH and I started having the feeling we would like another child.  After trying for 9 months, I feel like I am at a crossroads of sorts, (particularly due to my age ) and I would really appreciate some advice/info.

To sum it up- my husband's SA came back good.  I've had an HSG (clear), my cycles are about 40 days long, and I do ovulate (confirmed by 7dpo progesterone check each cycle).  I have done 3 cycles of clomid with my OB to help encourage a "stronger" ovulation/ and or more "targets".  She didn't do any ultrasounds/monitoring so really we have no idea how I responded.  At this point and after everything I've learned here, I've decided not to continue with the clomid since she doesn't do monitoring, and I don't know if it is helping any (or even hurting).

My OB has given me a referral to a fertility specialist.  I've been dragging my feet about it for a couple of reasons.  One is our insurance doesn't cover any fertility treatments.  Of course we would pay OOP if our chances were good with a particular treatment but it all seems like such a gamble.  The other is, we have decided not to do IVF, so I'm not sure if there is anything "in between" what I am doing now, and IVF.  This is where I could really use some input.  I know there are other fertility meds, trigger shots, IUI but would these increase my chances much since I already ovulate and SA was good?  I haven't had day 3 FSH done.  What info would this tell me?  I'm sure there is so much about this that I don't know.  What am I missing?  Part of me says just go to the RE and see what they say, but short of IVF, I'm not sure what options they would be able to offer me.

Thanks for bearing with me through this long post.  I know there are so many of you with so much more knowledge and experience than me, TIA for any advice and info you can help me with!

We are sort of in the same boat (I'm 43, DH is 44 in a month). We just started TTC this month, but have decided egg donors and IVF are not options for us.

We are going to get a referral to a specialist in December if I do not conceive naturally by then. I know from my reading and having friends go through fertility treatments that there are other options available. One, for example, is Femara which a lot of women over 40 get b/c of Clomid thinning the uterine lining.

IMHO, go get an initial consult and ask all your questions about alternatives, then take a bit of time to think, process and make a decision. Me and DH are going to do at least the consult if it comes to it in December..then weigh our options.

One of the other things is I don't tend to read too much. I spend a bit of time on these boards and I read a bit about my particular situation (low AMH level) but I don't go too far b/c then I start thinking too much. A key thing for me is low stress and keeping my anxiety about getting pregnant at bay.

I hope this helps at least a little...

    Welcome!

I understand about being OOP on the insurance. an RE will def do the cd3 testing on you.  Based on that, your other tests, and how agressive you want to be make a plan with you.   Good luck in whatever you decide!

Thanks to you both for your input.  It definatley helps to hear other's opinoins.  I have lots to think about but I'm leaning towards making an RE appointment to see what they say.  Thanks again, and i wish you the best on your TTC journeys.
