toddler nightmares?

DD has been waking up sometimes at night crying in her sleep, as if she is scared. Sometimes she will be sleeping and crying mama. she normally never wakes up at night, and this cry seems different than a typical wake up cry if that makes sense. so i am wondering if toddlers can have nightmares this young? she doesnt watch TV, so i dont know where the nightmares could come from? any thoughts?

Re: toddler nightmares?

  • I've heard that they can. Alexis has been waking up crying the last couple of nights too and it isn't because anything is wrong so it may be the case that she is having nightmares :(

  • LO sometimes seems like he is crying in his sleep for a second but then stops and he doesn't make up. I never thought it could be nightmares :(

  • PJ absolutely does. I have no doubt that he has nightmares and that he needs cuddles all throughout the night after he does have one.

  • Abby has night terrors and nightmares. They are awful. I read somewhere that because their sleep cycles are more volatile, toddlers tend to have more intense dreams, cry out in their sleep, and remember their dreams better than adults.

I don't really know what to do other than go snuggle her when it happens. As far as prevention, I am lost too.

  • Lily has been doing this since she was 6 months old.  She'll cry out about 3 times, but every time we go in there, she is sound asleep.  She doesn't seem to notice it because she is happy every morning.  I think her nightmares are things like "mommy isn't there when I need her," not because it's happened ever, but because that is something that would scare her.
