DD has always been scared of loud noises (particularly the vacuum and hand dryers in public restrooms). She also doesn't like people dressed as characters (i.e. Mickey Mouse, Elmo, etc.).
Now she's saying she doesn't want to go do Christmas b/c she doesn't like Santa, and she doesn't want to carve pumpkins b/c she all of the sudden doesn't like jack-o-lanterns.
Is this normal?
Re: anyone else's LO scare easily?
My son is in the same stage! He tells me he's scared of lots of things that he loves 5 minutes later. The other day he was having a sword fight with a ghost in our living room. lol.
My 2&1/2 year old is afraid of some things now. Before he would come out of his room in the morning and either sit in the living room and play or come wake me up. Now he will not leave his room unless one of us is in the kitchen(outside his room) and tells him to come out. He is afraid of the vaccuum, but that is because my younger brother scared him with a toy drill when he was a little over a year old. But still will not like the vaccuum, or the lawn mowers, if he is close to it or on it. If we see one running he's fine. He also is very afraid of pop up toys, like those things you step on and an animal pops up from the floor, mainly the spider things they have outside of Spencers. He is fine with people in costumes. We play with masks when we go to walmart and put them on and do funny dances, no matter how scary they may be, just to make sure that come halloween, he won't be afraid. He will giggle at those. We are trying to get him to like things, and not be afraid, so we try to show them how they work, or let him play with them. The Vaccuum is still kind of a problem. I did get him to use the hose and vaccuum of the couch, but that took some effort.
I am pretty sure fears are very normal at 2,3,4, etc esp as they get older and realized more of the 'bad' things that can happen.
Mine are 3 and DS in particular is scared of the dark, of 'shadows', and of pretty much all disney movies except cars & toy story, plus other kids' movies. We try to do family movie night every weekend and he always says noooo that he wants to watch 'a show' like barney, mighty machines or bob the builder, I think b/c he always gets afraid of something in the regular movies. he also says he is scared of random things & places when he doesnt want to go or wants to assert himself.
Yes, this is DS. He is slowly getting over some of them, but he still hates loud noises and costumes with masks.
We only watch a very select amount of movies as well.
I scare easily, so I totally get where he is coming from. We continue to challenge him, but not to the point where it is overly stressful. He still likes to confirm that Santa is NOT at the mall whenever we go. : )
For the example of trick or treating, we usually let DS dictate how many houses to go to. Each year it is more and more. (Last year a masked neighbor jumped out at him, and we had to go home after that. I heard his wife yell at him while we walked away with DS in tears, ha ha.)
