I have been looking at convertible car seats, but am unsure about a few things.....
#1- can a 'convertible' car seat still face backwards for awhile then forwards?
#2- My current car seat is in the middle in the back. When i turn my son around, can he still ride in the middle or does he now need to be behind a front seat?
Re: new car seat
You can use a convertible car seat rear facing or forward facing. Depending on your car and the space, the seat can be used rear facing or forward facing in the middle or on a side. The current recommendation is to keep children rear facing until at least 2 or until they out grow the rear facing limits on their seat. We have the Britax Marathon 70. You can use them rear facing until 40 pounds and forward facing until 70. My girls will be going to elementary school in them.
Yes, as long as you buy a convertible seat. As the prior poster stated, the recommendation is rear-facing until at least 2. My son turned 2 in August, and he is still rear-facing. We are planning on making it to 3.
Kids will normally outgrow seats by height way before weight, so no child will make it to 65/70lbs in a convertible seat. My DD is 4.5 she rides in a Recaro ProSport, which we moved her to shortly after she turned 3. She will likely ride harnessed in that seat for another 1-1.5 years, and then we will move her to a booster seat.
Some recommended seats are:
Cosco Scenera/Cosco Apt
Evenflo Triumph/Evenflo Momentum
Safety 1st Guide 65/Safety 1st Complete Air/Safety 1st On Side Air
Graco My Ride 65/70 and Graco My Size 70/Size 4 Me 70
Britax Roundabout/Marathon/Boulevard (these have shorter shells though, so they aren't recommended for really tall kids)
Compass True Fit
