Has anyone had to or will have to do tubes?

I finally got ds in for his 12 month appointment and shots. He once again has ear infections and lots of fluid in his ears. I think he has environmental allergies and the dr agreed. We are starting him on antibiotics and Singular for his allergies(finally!). The dr said his ears are terrible though and we go back in 10 days to see if his ears have cleared up and if not we will likely have to do tubes. I couldn't get the Singular today because of course, even though his dr wrote the prescription for the allergy medicine, my insurance company need further approval(it's not like it's pain medication). Has anyone else looking at having to do this or has already had them done? I have no idea what all happens. My older ds also had problems with his ears and ear infections, but never had tubes put in. I was hoping my super boob juice would prevent little brother from having so many ear problems, but no such luck.

  • I haven't but my cousin was a super sick and cranky baby. She got tubes in her ears and was like a different kid...hardly ever sick, not cranky, no ear infections.

  • Ds is already a very sweet baby and sleeps very well, so at least his ears aren't hurting him.

  • I typically just lurk on these boards, but wanted to share that DS recently had tubes in (at 10 mos) and our experience was great overall. DS had ear infections all the time (the last one was from May until Aug with us going to the pedi every 10 days). He stopped responding to antibiotics and we had to do daily antibiotic shots to get rid of the infection until we could get into the ENT and even then he still had fluid in his ears.

Getting tubes was scary because he had to be put under, but the surgery was so, so fast and he hasn't had another ear infection since, even when he had a case of croup. The only PITA part for after care is having to have ear plugs in anytime he is near water (mostly just bathtime or at the pool) because he is constantly trying to pull them out.

Have you been to the ENT yet? Ours was very very patient and answered all of our questions and made me feel really comfortable. If I remember right, it took about 3 weeks to get into the ENT, then another 4 or so weeks for the actual surgery.

Good luck to you and your LO!

Thanks for sharing! We have not been to one yet, but there is one that is part of the practice(it's a pediatric center) we go to, so we won't have to go far to see one. The pedi wants to see if the allergy medicine will help first, so I am still hopeful for that. I really think his allergies are the root of the problem.

  • My nephew had tubes a couple of months ago (right when he turned a year).  The surgery went great and was super fast.  I saw him later that day and he was honestly 100% his normal self.  It didn't affect him at all!

That was in May and he hasn't had another infection.
