Working Moms

any pumping moms work in a lab

Hello. First post on this board. I have been a lurker for some time since reentering the workforce is inevitable. I am a recent graduate non trafitional and am seeking work in a lab setting. I am concerned, not only about pumping at a new job, but also pumping in a lab setting. I probably won't have a desk or office and will just have to excuse myself to pump. Any advice or experience would be greatly appreciated!

Re: any pumping moms work in a lab

  • No experience with a lab, but my work is all cubicles, no offices with doors. They arranged for me to use a conference room. If the employer has more than a certain number of employees, they must provide a private space for you, and breaks for you to pump. (Although they don't have to pay you for that time - mine did, though)

I wouldn't ask about it until after you get a job offer, but after that, just be clear about what you need.

  • Hi,  I am not currently working, but I worked for 10 years in 3 different labs.  My first job my desk was in the lab at the end of the bench.   This was due to space limitations.  The rest of my jobs I had a regular office desk in a cubicle outside of the lab.  Most likely you will be assigned a cube and a computer.  You need a place to enter and analyze data.  Companies like that to be  outside of the lab so you can have a place for lunch, coffee etc.  The last two places I worked had a mother's room.  There are a lot of women in science so there needs must be met.

  • In our last building, I pumped in the restroom disabled stall.  Others I know pumped in the microscope room which was like a closet that they could lock.  Now in our new building, we have a mother's room on every floor.  Totally depends on your type of lab but if you work for a larger organization, their HR department should be able to give you assistance in this area.
  • I'm a nuclear medicine tech and our hospital has pumping rooms available.  I wasn't able to make it up there in time so I used one of our injection rooms as needed.  I could lock the door.  I just made sure to wipe all the surfaces down prior to using.

  • If you are looking in a hospital most if not all will have pumping rooms.

  • I pumped at work until DS was over 1 year, and I work in a lab!  That said, I always have had an office as well, but I pumped in the pumping room.  Just ask your department or HR office where you can express breastmilk.  In my experience, us science-minded mamas tend to be BFers (maybe because we're up on all the research Smile?) so if there are other moms at your work, they have likely encountered this before.  They might even have a pump room already set up.  Good luck!

  • Thanks everyone for the replies! I am trying not to stress about this transition and I feel better hearing everyone's experiences :
