Anyone know about alcohol in baking and children?

I just made a fruit cake that I soaked the fruit in liquor for. I assume I shouldn't give DD any of the cake?

Or does the alcohol cook out in the baking process?

  • I say it cooks out.  Even if it doesn't, it's not enough to harm.  It's almost the holidays.

  • My mom puts brandy in her peach cake. She never worried about giving it to us and I haven't worried about DD having it. Like PP said any little bit that is left it not going to hurt anyone.
  • Thanks ladies. Me and DD just sampled the cake. Delicious!

  • I looove baking with alcohol during the holidays (I make a killer eggnog cake baked & then drizzled with rum), but it doesn't actually bake completely out.  A typical cake in the oven for 25 minutes is probably going to lose less than half of it's alcohol content.  Considering most recipes don't use more than 1/4 cup for the entire cake, it's really a pretty insignificant amount you'd consume per serving.

And now I have cake on my "Must get done this week, or else" radar.  Thanks.  ;-)
