Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Thoughts on cribs and where they are made?

Our crib for baby #1 was paid for by family and cost was not an issue. We bought into the idea that "made in the usa" was best and safer then stuff made who knows where. We bought a Stanley Young America Crib solid wood made in the usa.  We are happy with the crib.

My husband wants to skimp on baby #2's crib. We are paying for it ourselves and he doesn't think it matters where we get our crib now.

I feel bad thinking baby #2 is going to get less then baby #1.

What do you think about cribs ie where they are made? solid wood? does it matter?

  • Given how much time a baby spends in their crib, we were willing to spend more for Made in the USA and GreenGuard certified. We have a Stanley YA crib as well. No regrets.

When do plan to start using a crib for #2? Will baby #1 be ready to transition to a different bed by then so that you can just use the crib you have for #2?

  • Baby #1 will be 22 months when #2 is born.  We are relocating next week and going to have to stay in a hotel for 30-90 days (till we find a house). Then in March we will return to the US and have to stay in a hotel again before, during, after the baby's birth. I just didn't think with all this moving around it would be a good idea to get her in a toddler bed early.

  • Can you put baby #2 in some type of co-sleeper for the first six months or so to extend the time baby #1 is in the crib? Or are you planning to use a crib from the start with baby #2.

  • I prefer to buy things made in the USA, but I don't think a crib made elsewhere is necessarily less safe. We had to buy out first crib ourselves, so we did a lot of research as to what was safe, sturdy, made of hardwood, and still affordable.

We went with the Graco Lauren and have been very happy with it. It's solid. I've laid in it with DD and it didn't so much as creak. We'll be getting a second one for the second baby.

This is us exactly.  If DS isn't ready for a toddler bed when our new baby is born, we'll just keep him/her in a cosleeper.  To be honest, DS #1 wasn't regularly sleeping in the crib till he was about a year old, so I think a PNP/cosleeper is totally doable for baby #2.  Made in the USA is/was KEY for us, so we went with Stanley as well.  Beds, cookware, and FOOD are key for us in terms of country of origin.  For example, we don't really eat shrimp anymore because it's all China/Vietnam, etc., and I don't trust their standards.  Same with metal cookware, cribs, etc.
