More evaluations for DS

I've posted before about DS's diagnosis of developmental delays and subsequent therapy through EI.  We've reached our first quarterly review and his developmentalist gave me a head's up on her recommendations.

She'd like him to have a vision evaluation as his fine motor skills are still behind.  He has issues using his hands, he holds his head a certain way to look at things, and he'll fixate on a lamp or window, so she thinks an eval would be beneficial.

She also suggested taking him to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh to have him evaluated in their development center.  Now that he's 13 months, there are bigger gaps in where he is vs. where he should be.  He IS progressing, and has yet to plateau on anything, but he's still falling behind.

She said suggesting more evaluations is always the hardest part of her job and that she's not a doctor, so to think about it and discuss it before deciding.  I noticed everything she mentioned, so it wasn't a shock.

For once, I am not blaming myself, because I do work with DS daily on his "homework" from his three different therapists.  I will tell DH about it when he gets home, but I already know that we'll have both evals done.  I also reassured the DV that she never  has to be nervous or worry about voicing her concerns to us.  She is the one with the education and experience and we trust her judgment.  As DS's parents, it's our job to get him whatever help he needs, so if there's something more we can do, I want to do it.

Re: More evaluations for DS

  • I can totally understand. Even if it turns out to be nothing it isn't worth the risk of waiting and having bigger issues pop up. I hope the evals give you some answers and solutions!

It's great to hear he is progressing, but I'm sure it would be so hard to know he is still falling behind.  It's great that you're being proactive and getting all the tests done.  That is the best way to know what he's dealing with and to work on closing any gap in his development.  I'm sorry you're going through this though, I know it must be very tough.  ((hugs))

^All this, and best of luck to you guys. You sound like great parents who want to do everything for your son.

  • I can't imagine how difficult this must be for your family. You seem like a very attentive and responsive mom and you are doing a wonderful job with him. I hope that these interventions lead to some answers and progress.

  • I'm so glad to hear he is making progress. You're doing a great job keeping up with his evaluations and homework. DS has a great advocate on his side.
  • you are an awesome mama. I love seeing the calm and reasonable tone of your post. He is lucky to have you! all the best.

  • I'm so glad to hear that he is progressing! I completely understand how scary it can be to have your LO be delayed -- been there and still are there. The best thing really is to get more evaluations if any delays are suspected. We've obviously been through vision evaluations and therapies -- for 9 months now. PLEASE don't hesitate to PM me with any questions, I'll give you my personal e-mail too, to make communication easier. I have LOTS of "knowledge" now of vision delays and treatment and would be happy to help and answer questions you may have. :o)  Keep us all posted on your DS' progress!

  • You really are a wonderful mother!  I am so glad that things are progressing and I hope that you can find some answers when it comes to your testing and evals.  Our DD has been through a lot of testing due to her hearing loss.  We have not gotten a lot of specific answers, but each testing that she has always teaches us ways to help her since she is different in that area than other children.  ((hugs))

  • Your attitude is awesome and that's only going to help your DS as you move forward. It's positive that you know not to find fault in anything you are doing.

Hopefully you can continue to make progress and get answers on any delays he has through the process!

  • Thanks for all the support and kind words, everyone.  I'll have another update on Wednesday after I meet with our service coordinator.  I think part of the reason I am able to stay positive about this is because I didn't dismiss my concerns as FTM silliness.

Over the summer, I mentioned to a few family members and friends that I thought DS was behind and they all told me, "Oh, he's fine.  Every baby is different."  I listened to my instincts and asked the pedi about it.  This was not an occasion that I wanted to be right, unfortunately, but it did a LOT for my faith in myself.

  • I think it's great you went with your gut and got him the help he need early. Hopefully he will continue to progress and grow. Good luck and I hope you can find all the help you need with the new evaluations.
