Well, without some more drama it wouldn't be my life, right?
He was admitted at 1:15am on Saturday after sitting in the ER for hours with an IV for fluids since he hadn't eaten or drank anything since 2:30pm on Friday.
The surgeon squeezed him in around 10:30am on Saturday. The procedure was supposed to be 20 minutes. It was an hour and 20 minutes before he was in recovery. The carrot in his esophagus was cooked, and it broke apart when the surgeon tried to extract it. So, there were about 20 little pieces of carrot stuck in there.
In recovery, he spiked a fever of 103.5. I about lost my cool as they scrambled around trying to find a doc to even prescribe some Tylenol. Ugh. About 30 minutes later his temp was normal again.
When he woke up he was really out of it, and his throat was really sore from the scope being in there for so long. I think they irritated his vocal cords as well because his voice is a little raspier than usual.
They made us stay overnight because he was under sedation for over an hour. He was released Sunday morning at 8:15am.
We are all pretty exhausted, and it's showing in Otis and Hank's attitudes. They are having a rough time transitioning back into routine. I think by this weekend, we should be better! ![]()
Anyways, here's the boy playing outside today. We are pretty happy to be home, and THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR YOUR WELL-WISHES. It means a lot to me.
Re: We are home... :)
Wow, not an experience anyone should have. So glad to hear that you are all home and even playing outside!
Is there anything you guys can do to prevent it from happening again, or is just one of those things that may or may not happen again?
It kinda goes with the territory.
We could have him dilated, but that poses some risks, and isn't 100% guaranteed to work.
We can also cut his food up really small, but I think this teaches him nothing about being careful. We will be cutting his food for him for awhile, but I don't want him to rely solely on us for his safety. He needs to learn this sooner rather than later. I mean, I know he's 3, but he needs to pick up on this quicker than his peers. He does a really good job. Like I said in the first post, it's been a year since this happened last. I'm pretty impressed with him. That being said, we're still going to be more careful about the size of his food and how much he's chewing and drinking during a meal.
He will have to be careful for the rest of his life.
