cradle handed down

Today my step mother gave me a cradle that has been in the family since my oldest nephew was born...about 17 years.  All the babies have slept in it.  Anyway, it seems to be safe.  Very sturdy, small wooden slats but open air.  What do you guys think in terms of safety?  What about the mattress? Again, looks clean and is firm.  Do you all think it is safe to use next to our bed for the first few months?

Re: cradle handed down

  • I would at least get a new mattress.

  • I have one that has been handed down as well. It was made by my grandfather right before he died, in the 1930s for my dad [his son]. No slats though, so I will probably only use it for naps when supervised.

I think it is all about what you are comfortable with, to an extent, as there are safety standards. I would get a new mattress.

  • I had 2 craddles for dd one was mine when I was a baby so 36 plus years old. At that age the are not very mobile and at least with my girl she was always swaddled. I found it to be just as safe as her brand new crib. That being said most often the crib was right next to my bed.
It's really about your comfort level....
