If there is a high likelihood that it will rain on trick or treat:

What will you do?  I have a 2 1/2 & 4 year old and this will be only their 2nd time going.  We live out in the country so we have to drive to a neighborhood (only @ 10 min away).  But right now it looks like its going to be cold @37 and rainy.  As a parent I want to say there is no way we are going (they never eat much of the candy anyways) but I feel bad because I know how excited they are and how much thought they put into their costumes (and yes the remember it all from last year).  What does your family do?  And no our town is not postponing it & unfortanetly the local nursing homes just did their trick or treat over the weekend and we weren't able to go.

  • I'd probably let them get dressed up, take the pictures, put on some ponchos and warm clothes and let them go to a few houses. At that age they probably only last a little while anyway. :)

  • Bundle up, bring and umbrella and have fun!!!  It's suppose to rain here as well, but my dd has the whole Halloween thing figured out, so we'll have to go out to a few houses.

It's always cold here for Halloween, kids usually have winter coats on over their costumes, its part of it, I guess.

  • Cold wouldn't bother me, but in rain I don't think I would go out walking the neighborhood, but I would drive them to a few houses - family, good friends, people I know would love to see them in their costumes. But like PP, it's always cold here on Halloween. As kids we designed our costumes to fit over coats or sweatshirts. We took our girls out for a trick or treat event this weekend with three layers under their costumes!

  • Last year was their first year and they surprisingly lasted the full 1 1/2 hours.  Cold doesn't bother me too much (we're use to cold) but the problem is cold (37 degrees), rainy and 70 mph winds.  But since posting this I saw that a few nearby towns (15-20 min drive) are rescheduling to Saturday so perhaps we will do that.  We have to drive to a neighborhood as it is so why not.  I just feel bad for those cities that are rescheduling because I have a feeling its going to be super packed!!
  • Check with your local mall, lots of them do trick or treating!

  • I live in Seattle so if we didn't go out in the rain we would never leave the house. If you have the right clothing then rain is not a problem. We just did the pumpkin patch in the rain and the kids had a blast. We all had on coats with hoods and boots and then we came home and had hot chocolate.

Growing up I can't remember many halloweens when we didn't have to wear coats over our costumes. I also think rain really bugs adults more than kids, if they are covered and bundled I would totally let them go to a few houses at least. Is there a town that is doing trick or treating in an area with retail? Since our kids are small we are going to a small downtown festival and most of the sidewalks have awnings so we probably won't be out in the weather too much.

    Good luck!

  • Oh, I just saw 70mph winds! Now that I wouldn't be likely to take my 2 and 4 year old out in! I like the mall idea now!
  • I live in Seattle - if we stayed inside every time it was cold and rainy, we'd never go outside.  I'd adjust costumes so they can be warm and (moderately) dry, not go out for too long (depends on how much it's raining - at least 10 minutes, probably not more than than 30), and have a change of clothes in the car.

ETA: I just saw the wind issue - that I would cancel for.  That could be incredibly dangerous, not just uncomfortable.

  • This was us last year w/ an almost 3 1/2 yo and 14mo twins... it was rainy and miserable. The girls were in the stroller, w/ coats and blankets and a blanket over the top. DH pushed them and I walked w/ DS who was going out for his very first honest to goodness T or T. We went 1 block down, 1 block up, 1 block over, and 2 blocks back. He got a respectable amt of candy and saw all the aunts... then we got warm. This year he's disappointed the hurricane is messing up his Halloween plans... but I'm thanking my lucky stars. Hoping it'll be at least dry on Saturday since everyone rescheduled!!
  • Do you have family in the area? The weather is questionable here as well so we're visiting my parents/grandparents/uncles to show off their costume/get candy, then we'll probably just go to their neighbor's houses so they get in a few houses before we get out of the rain to go somewhere else.
