Changing pad, 2 or 4 sided?

We are planning on putting a contoured changing pad on top of our dresser in the nursery.  I'm looking at the Naturepedic Organic ones but they come in 2 sided or 4 sided.  Any reason to go with one rather than the other?  The only thing I can think of is that the 2 sided ones might be usable for longer especially if LO is long and lean like her father.  Any suggestions?

Re: Changing pad, 2 or 4 sided?

  • Do the 2 sided one. I still use my changing pad with DD at 2 years old and I wouldn't be able to fit her if it was 4 sided. Plus most covers were made for the 2 sided pads.

  • I agree with pp.  My daughter is 2 and long but we still use her changing pad since we got the 2 sided and she still pretty much fits (getting close though!).

  • We have a 4 sided and still sue it with DS (22 months).  He uses the top side as a head rest.  But I would get the 2 sided if I had to choose again.  There aren't that many covers that I have found that fit nicely on the 4 sided.  I may actually splurge and get a 2 sided for when that furniture gets moved into DD's room.

  • Hmmm I think ours is a Sealy 3 sided and now I'm wondering if the covers will fit! Guess I'll check tonight.

  • We got a 2-sided one. Didn't even think of LO's length being an issue, honestly. By the time they get that big and mobile, it's sort of catch-and-change where you can, imo.

We have a 3 sided one and have never had a problem with the cover.  We loved it - DS had horrible reflux and if he had eaten then needed a diaper change, he would spit up everything.  It helped to put him  down with his head resting on the top side to give a little bit of an incline and keep his food down!  We are still using the same changing pad over 3.5 years later - and both kids still lay down on it.  DS's feet hang off the end, but whatever!  It is much easier to get him changed up there (he is potty trained, but does wear a pull up or diaper at night) rather than bending down, especially now that I am getting so much bigger!

  • We had a 2 sided changing pad with DS and we are going to get the same for DD. I never even thought about DS out growing the pad though because at this point we do more catch and go's or stand up changes now that he won't sit still for anything!

  • I went with the 2 sided ones - just because I wasn't sure if all covers were the same and I didn't want to run into problems trying to find covers that fit a 4 sided one!

  • We're going with a 3-sided one, as well, not that it has anything to do with OP's question! But I'd think it's more like a 2-sided one, where the baby can grow some and still be able to fit, because of the one open end.

  • we went with the 4 sided one. The cover I ordered off of etsy didn't fit right, even though I'd told the vendor which pad I needed it to fit (she made them). So, I'm now waiting to get new replacement covers in the mail.
