Mirena Users ? (Past and Present)

I had my Mirena placed in January.  I haven't had any issues until the last month and I'm trying to determine if I should have it removed.

The issues that I'm having are:

1) Weight gain.  I started a strict diet from the end of July through late September and I lost 4 lbs.  Not bad, but then this month I've gained 11 lbs.  In one month I went from feeling pretty good to not having any clothes that fit comfortably.

2) My skin is horrible!  I am breaking out in areas I've never had acne before (neck, back and hairline.  I have a history of cystic acne, but did Accuntane in 2007-2008 and the only time I have had breakouts since was during first tri with both girls.

My question is if you have or had Mirena did you have these issues?  If you removed it, did things improve?  If you didn't remove it, did thing improve?

I'm doing the Mirena because we're not absolutely 100% sure we're done having babies, but I got pg with DD2 on the pill.  I'm not sure what I'd go with if I have it removed?  Paragaurd?

TIA!

  • I would think if you've had it 8 months without these side effects it's probably from something else.

I have not had weight gain, but my skin is worse.  I attribute it to being an a triphasic pill the last 10 years of my life so that was probably controlling my acne for awhile.  My skin was perfect and now my face has more breakouts... but otherwise I have no side effects.

  • I have had mirena for 13 months. After 6 months I started gaining weight, and I noticed a lot more breakouts too. I too got pregnant on the pill after being on it for 10 years.

My doctor said that mirena wouldn't cause weight gain or the breakouts... But I have finally started to lose weight but my breakouts are still bad.. I started to lose weight after I had kidney stone surgery... But I also have started eating a lot less.

I still have the mirena.. But if you are looking into something else, keep looking and do some research.. Then take what you have to your dr and discuss some options...

  • I've had mirena in since February. I'm with PP. I haven't had any weight gain, but I have had some break outs. I'm not convinced though that the break outs are caused by mirena. I choose mirena because of its low dose of hormones. If you're absolutly positive you don't want more kids, how come you don't get your tubes tied? I really wanted to get that done after my daughter's birth in January, but my husband wasn't on board. What about Nuvaring? I've never used it, but my friends say good things about it!

100% the Mirena. I had the exact thing happen almost during the exact time line. I had it in November 2010-September 2011. I all of a sudden started gaining weight, horrible break outs and I was having horrendous mood swings. I had it taken out and within 2 weeks my symptoms were completely gone. We just used condoms until we started TTC #2.

  • After researching all weekend and talking to DH, I've decided to have it removed.  Per DH, I've been impatient and short with DH and the girls, so we think it is affecting my mood as well.

I think I'll give the Paraguard a shot.  I like the way the IUD works and I don't have to think about taking a pill, changing a ring, etc...

  • I don't have experience with Merena, but I was considering getting an IUD and asked a ton of women who used them what they like/don't like about them. Most of the women said they had heavier, longer, and more painful periods when they had Paragard. Some had it removed because their periods were so painful. I'm not trying to talk you out of it, just letting you know what I heard when I was asking women about it.

I know that is a possibility.  My doctor and I discussed the pros and cons of the Mirena and Paraguard when I was deciding which BC I would go with.  I chose the Mirena because of the hormones that lessen or go away with your period, because I've never had issues with hormones in the past.  I initially was going to go with the Paraguard, but my OB said that women who never had painful periods may have them, but she mentioned that it was more due to the changes your body has gone through with childbirth.

  • Had a Mirena placed at my 6wk follow up appt after DD1 was born.  At first, I loved it.  No periods at all!  Then I started having some extreme insomnia.  Baby was sleeping through the night but I was up 3 days straight.  I'm not a nice person when I'm extremely tired.  My poor DH.  I had it removed and was sleeping normally in 4 days.

We just did condoms between DD2 and this pregnancy.  I'm considering a Paraguard too.  My BFF had one placed in July. I'll let her be my guinea pig.
