Postpartum bleeding or period?

I gave birth 6 weeks ago to my preemie baby. She was 3 lbs 9 oz. It was a natural delivery with only a 1st degree tear. I only needed a couple stitches. I recoved fast and felt fine down there within 3 weeks. I bled postpartum for the standard 3-4 weeks. I'm exclusively breast feeding at this time.

Here's my question: I started bleeding again this past week. It kind of resembles my period, but I'm not sure if it is. I had sex at week 5 & 6 after giving birth. The red bleeding started this weekend after sex. It's not heavy by any means. Since I'm breast feeding, I didn't think I'd get my period for a while. I'm not in any pain.

Is something wrong? Any advice?

Re: Postpartum bleeding or period?

  • The same thing happened to me.  I bled for almost 6 weeks after my son was born.  He was a full term, vaginal delivery.  The bleeding varied from very light to bright red during the last few weeks and then it stopped completely.  I had a week "off" and started bleeding again which lasted for 6 days.  It was lighter than my period and wasn't accompanied by menstrual cramps.  I am exclusively breastfeeding as well.  I was told this was because my son started sleeping through the night at 6 weeks and therefore I wasn't breastfeeding for a longer than normal period of time.  This is quite normal.  My doctor told me some women start their periods earlier than others even if they breastfeed.  I hope this helps!

  • it's uncommon to start your cycle in the first 8 weeks if exclusively breastfeeding, but not impossible. I would see your OB to rule out other organic causes for the bleeding.
